Ribbon • Mortar and Pestle experiment aims
• Oxygen (from • Bunsen’s Burner to show the Mg + O2 → MgO
flame) (lighter was used synthesis reaction
instead) between oxygen
and magnesium. Balanced:
• Procedure – First,
a 5-inch piece of 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO
magnesium ribbon
was cut and was
held with a
crucible tong.
Then, it was put
over a flame from
a lighter. After a
few seconds, the
magnesium ribbon
stated sparking up
and burning into
an ash-like
substance called
magnesium oxide.

Decomposition • Lead Nitrate • Test Tube • Description – This Decomposition:
Reaction • Spatula experiment aims
• Bunsen’s Burner to show the Pb(NO3)2 → PbO + NO2
(lighter was used decomposition + O2
instead) reaction of lead
nitrate into lead
oxide, nitrogen Balanced:
dioxide, and
oxygen. 2Pb(NO3)2 → 2PbO +
• Procedure – First, 4NO2 + O2
a scoop of lead
nitrate compound
was put into a test
tube. Then, the
test tube was
heated over a
flame. After a
while, the lead
nitrate started
emitting gases
and some product
also got stuck at
the bottom of the
test tube. The
product at the
bottom of the test
tube was lead
oxide, and the
gases were

• Procedure - First, 2H2O2 → 2H2O + O2
a scoop of
manganese
dioxide was
placed into an
Erlenmeyer flask.
Then, 30 ml of
hydrogen peroxide
was poured into it.
The mixture
bubbled up and
went through the
process of
condensation,
which contains
water and oxygen.

Single Replacement Magnesium Ribbon • Test Tube • Description – This Single Replacement:
Hydrochloric Acid • Graduated experiment aims
Cylinder to show the single Mg + HCl → MgCl2 +
replacement H2
reaction between
magnesium and
hydrochloric acid. Balanced:
• Procedure – First,
3 inches of Mg + 2HCl → MgCl2 +
magnesium ribbon H2
was placed into a
test tube. Then,
about 50 ml of
hydrochloric acid
was poured into
the test tube. The
mixture started
emitting hydrogen
gases and a
white-colored
substance called
magnesium
chloride was also
left in the test
tube. The mixture
also heated up.

the sodium sulfate
powder was
dissolved in
distilled water to
ensure that the
barium chloride
reacts as quickly
as possible. Then,

Combustion Reaction Camphor • Petri Dish • Description – This Combustion:
Oxygen • Spatula experiment aims
• Bunsen’s Burner to show the C10H16O + O2 → H2O
(lighter was used combustion of + CO2
instead) camphor.
• Procedure – First, Balanced:
a scoop of
Ethanol camphor was
Oxygen 2C10H16O + 27O2 →
placed onto a petri
20H2O + 16CO2
dish. Then, it was
lit with a lighter. It
immediately
burned and
produced black
smoke. We put a
spoon over the
flame and
observed that soot
formed on the
spoon.

• Bunsen’s Burner combustion of
(lighter was used ethanol. Balanced:
instead) • Procedure – First,
we poured about C2H5OH(1) + 3O2 →
15 ml of ethanol 2CO2 + 3H2O
into a petri dish.
Then, we lit it up
with a lighter. It
immediately
flamed up and we
observed that its
flames were blue
in color, which
meant that it was
hotter than the
flame of camphor,
which was yellow
in color.
