Answer the following questions while watching the video…

1.) How did she get started with the activity? (3points)

She had the children use their eyes (sense of sight) to observe the painting and think about
what they were seeing for 30 seconds, without discussing as a group.

2.) What kinds of questions did she ask, how did she follow up? (3 points)

“What do you notice?”

“What else can we find?”
“What do you see that makes you think that?”

After asking each question and calling on a student, they discussed why they think it is what
they said it is. Like observing the water, clouds, color of the clouds, etc.

3.) What kinds of thinking strategies were practiced by the students? (3 points)

Class discussion using visual literacy clues, individual reflection, encouraging different thoughts
and opinions.

Now process what you just saw and discuss the following questions at your table…

4.) How could we connect this activity to the elements and principles? (5 points)

Could discuss the line work of the art and how it moves your eyes to a specific part of the
image.
Discuss the colors of the art and how the clouds look dark suggesting rain versus when it’s
sunny and how they are white and fluffy.
The emotion being portrayed but the use of color.
Shape of the art and it being organic.
The space that the image is taking up versus how much negative space there is.
5.) What kinds of follow up or next step activities could we do after something like this? (5
points)

Following up from this discussion we could have each child try to create their own landscape
project using some of the same colors. Each child would be given the same colors of paint and
allowed to create their own landscape. Given that they are in kindergarten it wouldn’t look the
same as the painting but could portray the same feeling as the colors would all be the same. At
the end we could hold a discussion on what they painted and how they felt painting with those
colors.

6.) Elementary Ed. how could this be used cross curricularly? Art Ed. how could this transfer
into a project? (5 points)

This would be a great opener to discuss the different kinds of landscapes there are in the world
such as prairie, mountains, oceans, forests etc. We could discuss why we have different
landscapes, the kinds of animals that live in each place and the type of weather that is
associated with each area. From there the children could choose what type of landscape they
prefer and do a project with their classmates about the type of animals that live there.
