CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Online Games are part of our human life activities. Online Games are preferred for many different
reasons like enjoyment, leisure, overcoming stress, gaining status, being in a comfort zone, and many more.
Sometimes students involve in games to escape their problems in real-life. In recent years, the advancements in
technology are at such an incredible level that it is utilized in all areas of human life including in daily life
routines. Online Games are being more popular now among students. There are many benefits of online games
or also known the nationwide as internet, this is can be an entertainment tool, but also an important professional
resource for work and communication for studying as well. Currently, the internet is viewed as a means to aid in
communication. It is also used as a source of entertainment and to establish connections with society. The
internet has also enabled students in getting global access to information.

The researchers witness that online games help students to forget their problems even in a short period,
and at the same time it makes them happy, and playing online games gives comfort. An individual can have a
good life in the future just by playing online games. But playing online games has good and bad effects on our
physical, emotional, mental, and social.

Recently, online games are being part of our important habits in daily lives. As time passed by, online
games is being a negative influence on people's families, academics, and business lives and it also causes
problems in interpersonal relationships. Gaming addiction is one of the major problems in society. Gaming
addiction has many risk factors; such as sex, age, cognitive factors, and psychopathological conditions such as
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD), depression, anxiety, impulsivity, social anxiety, and self-esteem
which are associated with online games addiction. Psychopathological factors especially ADHD and depression
were the strongest risk factors for having a gaming addiction. Gaming addiction is an effect on overall health.
Gaming addiction excessively can negatively affect those students' emotional development and as well their
academic success.

Online gaming has grown in popularity among students as a pastime, however, there are worries about
the effects of excessive gaming on their health and everyday routines. This review of the literature seeks to give
readers an overview of contemporary research (2018–2023) on the detrimental daily habits that students who
play online games develop.

Numerous physical health issues, including weight, body pain, and poor sleep, have been linked to
excessive online gaming. According to a Voss et al. (2018) study, students who play online video games for
more than three hours per day are more likely to become obese. As a result of extended sitting and repetitive
strain injuries, excessive gaming has also been connected to musculoskeletal pain. (Baker et al., 2018). Last but
not least, a study by Lemola et al. (2019) discovered that playing too many video games can cause poor sleep
quality and increased daytime sleepiness.

Addiction to online gaming has been linked to several mental health issues, such as social isolation,
sadness, and anxiety. Students who are addicted to online gaming are more likely to exhibit signs of depression
and anxiety, according to a study by Li et al. (2018). Additionally, a person may disregard their social life to
continue gaming, which might result in social isolation. (Zhang et al., 2021).

Online gaming too much has been linked to bad academic results. Wu et al.'s (2019) study discovered
that students who play online games for longer than two hours per day have poorer grades than those who play
for less than two hours per day. A study by Chen et al. (2020) also revealed that playing video games
excessively can result in bad time management and disregard for academic obligations.

Excessive internet gaming can result in several undesirable daily habits, including poor academic
performance, physical and mental health issues, and physical and mental health issues. Thus, it is crucial to
encourage students to play responsibly and to spread knowledge about the potential drawbacks of excessive
gaming.

The incidence of poor daily routines among young people as a result of excessive internet gaming
dramatically rose between 2018 and 2023. (Twenge et al., 2018; Cao et al., 2021). Many young people spend
several hours gaming every day, frequently to the detriment of other crucial activities like interacting with
friends or engaging in physical activity. (Twenge et al., 2018). As a result, there was an increase in incidences
of obesity, bad posture, and visual issues among young gamers. (Zhuang et al., 2020). Many additionally had
sleep deprivation and inconsistent eating patterns, which hurt their general health and well-being. (Cao et al.,
2021).

The prevalence of high-speed internet and the never-ending supply of new games to play contributed to
the trend's persistence despite mounting worries from parents and health professionals. (Zhuang et al., 2020).
Many young people found the allure of online gaming to be too great, which produced a generation of gamers
with significant health issues. (Twenge et al., 2018).

To address the issue, various measures were taken, such as public awareness campaigns and programs to
encourage constructive gaming practices. (Cao et al., 2021). But development was gradual, and the number of
young gamers who had harmful daily routines kept increasing. (Twenge et al., 2018). By 2023, it was evident
that immediate action was required to address the issue and safeguard the health and well-being of future
generations. (Zhuang et al., 2020). Online gaming remained a common pastime, although initiatives were made
to encourage young people to adopt more balanced and healthy daily routines. (Cao et al., 2021).

The conduct of this study is important because the rising popularity of online gaming is also a growing
concern for gaming addiction among students. Hence, research on gaming addiction can lead to a better
understanding of the phenomenon and learn ways to prevent the potential harm it has. It’s important to
understand that video games are a risk factor for poor lifestyle habits that may contribute to poor health (Moore,
2020). Researchers observe some students play games in their free time instead of doing an academic
performance or any productive activity. People should be alert when partaking in gaming, especially in the time
they spend. According to a study by the World Health Organization (2022), a gamer who develops changes in
terms of physical, psychological, and social health will dismiss the task of everyday life.

The study's main purpose is to propose awareness that gaming addiction is a concerning issue among
senior high school students, and it requires it to be resolved before it gets worse. Attraction to video games
among young people could lead them to many problems involving social, emotional, and physical health
(Hazar, 2018). This research pursues to change the unhealthy habits of students and make them understand that
excessive gaming is harmful. Although, that will be tough because, once a gamer has reached high levels of
dopamine while playing video games, it can be difficult to find other activities that duplicate this kind of high
(Uskoki, 2023). But the researchers will do their best to fulfill the goal of the study for the sake of the victims of
gaming addiction.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Psychological Factor

Environmental Factor

Figure 1: The relationship of Psychological Factor,Social Influences, Gaming Addiction and Unhealthy Daily
Routines

The conceptual framework paradigm shows that environmental, social, and psychological all contribute
to the emergence of gaming addiction and will lead to unhealthy daily routines. The model suggests that
gaming addiction and unhealthy daily routines are the dependent variables, while the independent variables
include psychological, social, and environmental aspects. These elements may interact and feed off one another,
creating a vicious cycle of obsessive gaming.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The proposed theoretical framework integrates the Health Belief Model and Social Cognitive Theory to
understand senior high school students' behaviors related to gaming addiction. The Health Belief Model (HBM)
developed by Rosenstock can be applied to understand how students perceive the risks and benefits of gaming
addiction. This HBM suggests that individuals are more likely to engage in health-related behaviors if they
perceive themselves to be susceptible to the health problem, perceive the health problem to be severe, believe
that the benefits of taking action outweigh the barriers, and are motivated to take action. It implies that if
students perceive gaming has more benefits than risks, then they would likely engage in the activity.

Meanwhile, the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) developed by Bandura is another relevant health
behavior theory that can be utilized to recognize beliefs and the social environment that influence students in
gaming. This theory states that individuals learn behaviors through observational learning, self-efficacy beliefs,
and the interplay between personal factors, environmental factors, and behavior. It explained that the students'
self-efficacy beliefs, observational learning from peers and family members, and the social norms related to
gaming in their social environment can influence their behaviors related to gaming addiction.
