Test-1, Semester-I (2020-21)
Date: 14/9/2020 Duration: 30 Minutes
Maximum marks : 20 Time: 5.05PM-5.35 PM

1. Upload the Smith chart, calculations (if any) and final answers for each corresponding questions. Use
separate Smith Chart for each question.

2. Use pencil to work on the smith chart. Make a small circle around the marked points on Smith Chart.

3. The answers should be written clearly and calculated upto three decimal places.

4. Submit your pdf file well before the End time to avoid late submission penalty. No extra time will be
given for uploading the file.

6. Save all the solutions in a single pdf file in ‘InstituteID.pdf’ format. Write your name and ID
(handwritten) on each page of the submitted file. [Example : 2018AAPS1032G.pdf ]

Q.1 A 3λ long lossless transmission line of characteristic impedance Z0=50 ohm, is terminated in a load
impedance ZL = 40+j60 ohm. Calculate the following parameters using the (Impedance-) Smith Chart:

(a) Reflection Coefficient ГL (polar form=magnitude and angle in degrees) [2]

(b) VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) [2]

(c) Admittance YL (Complex rectangular form) [2]

(d) Impedance Z(l) at l = 0.3 λ from the load. [2]

(e) Reflection Coefficient Г(l) at l = 0.3 λ from the load. (polar form=magnitude and angle in degrees)

[2]

Q.2. On a lossless transmission line (characteristic impedance Z0 = 50 ohm), VSWR = 2 is measured when
a load (ZL) is connected. If the load is shorted (short circuit load), the voltage minima is shifted by 0.18 λ
towards the load direction. Determine the load impedance (ZL) using (Impedance-) Smith Chart. [5]

Q.3. Design an inductance L = 20 nH using short circuited and open circuited transmission line
(characteristic impedance Z0 = 100 ohm) sections for 2 GHz signal frequency. [5]
