Outcome Reflection 3: Decision Making and Production for Drafts
1. What did your chosen assignment do to make you think about things such as audience,
genre, and purpose? What did you know about those concepts before this class? What did
you learn while doing the assignment? How did you apply these concepts in the
assignment you chose?
- For this question, I am choosing to reflect on the question, “How does the way Lamott
approach drafting contrast with how you’ve been taught to approach drafting? Do you
feel better, worse or the same about the way you draft after reading this? Would you
apply this advice?” based on “Shitty First Drafts” by Lamott from Reading Response 2.
This assignment gave me the realization that I have always taken drafts too seriously, or
at least I was taught to take them more seriously than they should be. Getting all your
ideas onto paper like Lamott suggested when writing a first draft is something that I
found very helpful. It allowed me to truly understand the meaning of writing a “shitty”
first draft, and why writing them was so important. The idea of a shitty first draft also
goes against following a specific format, even though it may stick to a similar genre.
Essentially, writing the “shitty” first draft allows you to write anything down that may be
important for the genre, audience, and purpose. Showing me overall that deciding to write
all your ideas down in the end gets everything into one place, and therefore allows you to
produce the best outcome, allowing you to be able to address your audience, genre, and
purpose more often.
