Activity The teacher will introduce the topic of patterns by telling
students that patterns are all around us. The teacher will ask
students to provide examples of patterns and make a list on
the SMART Board of what they say.

The characteristics of patterns will be discussed. The teacher


should ask, “what makes a pattern?” Students will use the
think-pair-share discussion strategy to discuss the definition of
a pattern.

The teacher will use math stations to help students develop


their knowledge of patterns. One station will be a worksheet
where students will work on continuing patterns. Another
station will be using a cereal, such as Captain Crunch, where
students will be able to create their own pattern. Another
station will be a worksheet where students will work on
continuing patterns. The last station will be using the SMART
Board activity to practice identifying, continuing, and creating
patterns. The teacher will be stationed at this station to ensure
students understand the topic while they interact with
patterns. The students will take turns in their groups working
with the Christmas bulb activity while including their rationale
for their decisions.

The teacher will bring closure to the lesson by asking students


what questions they have. Also, the teacher will revisit the
question about examples of patterns around us. Students

pattern.
