Assignment #1

Due: Sep 28st, 2022 (Wed) at 6:30 pm

Total Score: 100 points
This assignment covers material from Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of the lecture notes.
You are encouraged to show your calculation steps in detail, so as to obtain partial scores in
case of incorrect answers.
to turn in the assignment? (1) During the lecture/ tutorial sessions, or (2) Assignment drop
box outside Lady Shaw Building (LSB) Room 123.

Problem 1 [12 points]: Consider a sample of 7 students from STAT1012. The hour of courses
they enrolled in Year 1 are given as follows:
𝑥1 = 60, 𝑥2 = 56, 𝑥3 = 64, 𝑥4 = 56, 𝑥5 = 60, 𝑥6 = 64, 𝑥7 = 60
(a) [3 points] Calculate the sample mean, median and mode of the hour of courses enrolled.
(b) [2 points] Is the distribution symmetric, left-skewed, or right-skewed? Why?
(c) [3 points] Suppose 3 more students were asked, and the hour of courses they enrolled in
Year 1 are given by the following:
𝑥8 = 72, 𝑥9 = 68, 𝑥10 = 64
Based on the 10 data points collected, compute the sample mean, median and mode,
and verify that Sample Mean > Median.
(d) [2 points] Is the distribution of the 10 data points in part (c) symmetric, left-skewed or
right-skewed?
(e) [2 points] Please write down how to justify the shape of the data based on the Mean and
Median.

Problem 2 [12 points]: Consider the descriptive statistics of 15 data points x1, x2, …, x15 as
follow:
𝑥̅ = 26, 𝑠 2 = 7, 𝑄0 = 21, 𝑄1 = 24, 𝑄2 = 𝑄4 = 28
(a) [4 points] Calculate the values of ∑15 15 2
𝑖=1 𝑥𝑖 , ∑𝑖=1(𝑥𝑖 + 1) and the IQR.

(b) [4 points] If we transform the original data xi to the new data yi as follows:
𝑦𝑖 = 3 − 3𝑥𝑖 for 𝑖 = 1, 2, 3, . . . , 15
What are the sample mean, median, range and sample variance of 𝑦1 , 𝑦2 , … , 𝑦15 ?
(c) [4 points] Suppose that two new data points 𝑥16 = 33 𝑥17 = 19 is added to the
original data set. What are the (i) sample mean and (ii) median and (iii) sample variance
of the 17 data points 𝑥1 , 𝑥2 , … , 𝑥16 , 𝑥17 ?

Problem 3 [18 points]: Suppose we are interested in the weight of female students in a
class. A sample of 20 female students were chosen, and their weights (in lb) were recorded
as follow:
108 116 85 112 124 147 109 103 104 142
111 114 118 98 129 105 127 109 132 119
(a) [3 points] Draw a stem-and-leaf plot for the data.
(b) [3 points] What are the sample mean, median and mode of the data?
(c) [3 points] What is the 30th percentile of the weights?
(d) [3 points] Calculate the interquartile range (IQR) of the data.
(e) [3 points] How many outliers are there in the data set?
(f) [3 points] Sketch the boxplot of the data.

Problem 4 [9 points]: Consider the following two samples:

Sample 1: 110, 109, 108, 107, 108, 106, 100, 106, 100
Sample 2: 110, 106, 100, 106, 108, 100, 108, 106, 100
(a) [3 points] Calculate the sample range for both samples. Based on the results,
would you conclude that both samples exhibit the same variability?
(b) [3 points] Calculate the sample standard deviations for both samples. Do these
quantities indicate that both samples have the same variability?
(c) [3 points] Write a short statement contrasting the sample range versus the sample
standard deviation as a measure of variability.

Problem 5 [15 points] Let five cards (a hand) be drawn at random from an ordinary deck of
52 playing card.
(a) [3 points] Calculate the probability that all card is a Spade ♠.
(b) [3 points] What’s the probability that we get Four of a Kind (exactly Four cards of one
rank and one cards of another rank)?
(c) [3 points] What’s the probability that exactly three cards are kings and exactly two cards
are queens?
(d) [3 points] What’s the probability that exactly two kings, two queens and one jack?
(e) [3 points] What’s the probability that we get Full House (exactly Three cards of one rank
and two cards of another rank)?

Problem 6 [20 points]: Roll a fair die twice and record the number. We consider three
events: A = {Second time is even number}, B = {First time is odd number}
and C = {Same value in 2 times (double appears)},
(a) [3 points] What’s the sample space?
(b) [3 points] Please calculate the probability: Pr(A); Pr(B) and Pr(C)
(c) [3 points] What is the relationship between A and B (Mutually exclusive or not mutually
exclusive, independent or dependence)?
(d) [3 points] What is the relationship between B and C (Mutually exclusive or not mutually

exclusive, independent or dependence)?
(e) [3 points] A, B and C are mutually independent or pairwise independent? Why?
(f) [5 points] Please compute: Pr (A ∪ C c ) and Pr ((A ∪ B)c ∪ C)

Problem 7 [14 points]: Two students Amy and Betty are taking STAT1012 this term.
Suppose (i) Amy attends class 50% of the time, (ii) Betty attends class 70% of the time, and
(iii) given that Amy attends the class, the chance for Betty to attend the class is 90%.
Let A = {Amy attends the class tomorrow}, and B = {Betty attends the class tomorrow}.
(a) [3 points] Do you think events A and B are independent? Explain.
(b) [3 points] Do you think events A and B are exhaustive? Explain.
(c) [4 points] Given that at least one of the two students attend the class tomorrow, what is
the probability that Amy attends the class tomorrow?
(d) [4 points] Given that at most one of the two students attend the class tomorrow, what is
the probability that Amy attends the class tomorrow?
