Sweat
Sweat
Summary
Notes
For that very reason it had taken Lily very, very long to convince her to come dancing with
her, but right now she couldn't regret it. The music was... different, full of rhythm, full of
promises, full of emotion. The dancing was different too. People moved as if they didn't care
for a thing, whirling around, some not even dancing with each other, but all by themselves.
It was called ballroom, but there was nothing formal about it, not the flickering lights, not the
clothing, not the way they flirted with each other without hesitation. Not in the way the sweat
glistened on Lily's brow and dripped into her cleavage as she moved. If one asked Marlene
about it, that was the most enticing thing she had seen in a long while.
She wasn't the only one who thought so, if the number of young men who tried to flirt with
her, was anything to go by, but luckily Lily wasn't interested in any of them and had no
difficulties to show it. She would sway all by herself and Marlene felt the world fall away as
she stopped and watched her.
She couldn't tell how much time had passed, when Lily slipped back to her side, elbowing her
in the process, grinning wide and free. “Hey, what about a drink?”
Marlene nodded on automatic and had to shake her head a few times to make her eyes focus
again, at least focus on anything else than the single drop, that ran down from Lily's brow all
the way to her collar.
“What?” Lily tilted her head and looked over, with shadowed eyes and a cheeky smile. “So
dumbfounded by Muggle dancing?”
Yeah... Muggle dancing. For years and years Marlenne would have chosen to use that excuse.
It was just too easy, it explained everything, didn't it. But the music played on in her head,
swirling in circles and messing up everything. Forgotten all the fears of losing her best friend,
forgotten all the worry that this wasn't proper. If she couldn't say it tonight, she never would,
and she was a Gryffindor, wasn't she?
For a moment Lily looked at her in confusion, unsure if she had heard that, had understood it
right. “You mean...”
Marlene felt scorching hotness rise in her cheeks and already regretted she had said it at all,
but nodded anyway. In for a Knut, in for a Galleon. “Yeah. I'm... sorry. I know it's...”
“Before you say something stupid now...” Lily laughed, leaned in and closed her lips over
Marlene's, cutting away all objections.
Five breathless minutes and a backwards walk into a dark corner of the room later, Lily
finally let her have a proper inhale.
“I thought you would never ask me. Almost thought I read it wrong.”
“Never,” Marlene assured with conviction. “You are the most beautiful thing in the world.”
Later in the dead of the night, back in their rooms and far away from prying eyes, Marlene
was in heaven, as she followed the trail of the beads of sweat with her lips and tongue. And
maybe she was imagining it, for Lily had showered, but she thought she could still taste the
salt there.
