Purpose

This course introduces students to fundamental principles of data communications with the
view to enabling them understand the basic concepts of data transmission and data processing;
types of media and methods of accessing the media; error detection and error correction
techniques; design considerations; information theory; channel coding, entropy etc. It aims at
preparing students for computer networking , mobile computing and other advanced courses in
data communication.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course a student should be able to:

1. To understand the principles of radio propagation and data transmission


2. To understand underlying principles on data encoding and decoding
3. Analyze encoding techniques
4. To understand different types of media and their characteristics
5. Determine design parameters for a communication system
