What does Cambridge want you to do with TEXT A
Q1a)
It wants to assesses your understanding of explicit ideas and information that is
clearly

Explicit means:
Information that is
clearly stated.

- Pay attention to the amount of marks that the question is.

- You can explain the words with the help of a short sentence. Just make sure that you explain
both the words.
1c) Always pay attention to the paragraph that it asks you to re-read.

-Pay attention also to the command verbs: ‘give’ if it says give, if it’s a basic select and retrieve
question then usually it’s asking you to select and retrieve two explicit ideas.

- There are bullet points as well so the answers just need to be short and to the point.
- You are not expected to reword here, just quickly highlight.

1d)
i) Usually asks you to read 3, 4, 5 paragraphs
- It could ask you to give explicit or implicit points.
- Don’t waste time rewording it.

ii) It is also addressed as firstly, secondly, lastly question. You need to write three sentences.

-Rewording is not necessary.

1e) It is the first question that asks you to use your own words with the exception of a previous
synonym question.

-It is a three marker so it’s a firstly, secondly, lastly.

- You might need to reword some sort of adjectives or verbs or nouns. Not to be reworded.

Remember a summary is a

-Select around 8 ideas
-Pay attention to the question and what it is asking you to summarize.
-Sometimes it asks you to summarize two strands so look for that conjunction. They
will out it in bold.

-Sometimes students struggle summarizing two strands and getting that balance
right. If you are one of those students then you should write two separate paragraphs
and have four ideas in each roughly 60 words.
- In case of one strand question you can begin with a discourse marker: Firstly and
include keywords from the passage.
-Use more complex sentence structures fitting more than one idea in a sentence.
Through using more complex sentence structures you will be able to include multiple
ideas in one sentence.
- Group the ideas in a logical way.
- In terms of writing marks it is quite easy to get at least 3/5 provided your
spelling, punctuation and grammar is decent.
-Word Limit can be a little wavy.
