Standard Sets of Numbers
Set:
Set is a well-defined collection of distinct objects or things is known as
set.

Set builder form
Notation:
A series or system of symbols used to represent numbers, amounts, or
elements of a set is called notation.
We used different symbols to represent. Some basic symbols which are
normally used such as follows:

1. Natural Numbers:
A set which consist set of all numbers starting from 1 is called set of
natural numbers.
Example:
N = {1, 2, 3,4,5}
In set builder:
N= { x : x ϵ N ˄ 0< x >6 }
2. Whole Numbers:
A set which contain set containing all natural numbers and also start
from zero (0) is known as whole number.
In set builder:
{x:xϵw˄0<x>7}
3. Integer Numbers:
A set which contain all negative numbers of natural number, zero and all
positive natural numbers is called integers numbers.
Example:
Z = { -2, -1, 0, 1, 2,}
In set builder:
Z= { x : x ϵ Z ˄ -2 ≤ x ≤ 2}
4. Even Numbers:
A set which contain set of natural numbers, which are divisible by 2 is
called set of even numbers.
Example:
E = { 2, 4, 6, 8 }
In set builder:
E={ x : x ϵ N ˄ 2 ≤ x ≤ 8 }
5. Odd Numbers:
A set which contain set of natural numbers, which are not divisible by 2
is called set odd numbers.
In set builder:
O = { x : x ϵ O ˄ 1 ≤ x ≤9 }
6. Rational Number:
A set which contain all the numbers that can be written as p/q form.
Zero is included. Where q≠0. It is denoted by ‘Q’.
7. Irrational Numbers:
A set of numbers that cannot be written in p/q form is called Irrational
numbers. It is denoted by Q`.
A = { x : x ϵ ᶲ ˄ | ᶲ|=0}
Example:
A={}
In Set Builder Form:
A = {x | x ∈ N and 7 < x < 8}
Example:
S={8}
In Set Builder form:
S = { x | x ∈ N, 7 < x < 9}
C = { X | X ∈ N, X ∉ p, 10<X>24 }
