Today, before an Olympic site Is awarded to a city, a group of world class cities compete to win over the International Olympic Committee (loc) who is responsible for choosing the location of the Olympic games. In ancient fimes, this was not the case. The original Olympic Games took place in Olympia located on the West coast of Greece - a location with no population at all According to Greek mythology, Zeus, the king of gods, initiated the Games. After defeating his father, Kronos, in a wrestling match for control of the world, Zeus decided to hold a contest among the gods to celebrate his victory. There are numerous other mythological stories that offer versions of the origin of the Games. One thing is certain - the Greeks had great respect for heroes. One such hero was Herakles, the founder of the Olympic Games, He was a son of Zeus and famous for his 12 Labours, which involved wrestling a lion and holding up the sky. When he died, he became a god - the only hero to do so. The Games may have been discontinued for some time until King Iphitos of Elia, acting on a message from the oracle of Delphi, believed that he could save Greece from plague and war by bringing back the Games. Iphitos invited the states of Greece to assemble at Olympia for a competition. The first of these early Games consisted of one running race (the stade race), which was won by a local runner known as Koroibos. This single event blossomed into the largest, and most important athletic event in the world - the modern day Olympics as we know them. miieaiertie Ae ‘Match the underlined words from the passage with the meanings. 1. population + * @ epidemic 2. initiated : +O crow 3. numerous . . eo group together 4. versions . + © ‘oundation 5. ofigin . *@ started 6. plague . . @ inhabitants 7. assemble . * © ivpes 8. blossomed =» % ® many Semfences The basic sentence is made up of a subject and a predicate. Perhaps the biggest advancement to date has been the development of the microprocessor. A microprocessor (microchip) is the linkage of a huge number of transistors, which forms a complex circuit, Televisions, telephones, cell phones, aufomobiles, computers, and various | other electrical equipment function on microprocessors or microchips. The first transistor was built in the US in 1947. It was made out of a paperclip, gold foil, and a piece of material called germanium. By 1997, the ratio of transistors to man was a million to one, In the 1960's, a single IBM computer filled a large room. By the year 2010, It is estimated that 2,000 tiny transistors will fit across the width of a finger. Microchips containing a billion transistors will be common in the future according to Federico Faggin, the inventor of the microprocessor, The microchip will be the force behind the so-called “smart” machines that will be a big part of our lives. Houses will be totally automated. Computers will lock our doors, close windows, shut off lights, and make dinner. Personally coded “smart cards” will replace credit cards We will have no need for money, health cards, a driver's license, social insurance cards, or any other form of identification. By the year 2020, homes will be equipped with robots that will serve food, therapy beds for massage treatments, and computers that control temperature and operate most appliances The world will be a better place because of the microprocessor, The future holds the possibility of pollution control, a greener environment, energy conservation, medical breakthroughs, and in general, an improved lifestyle. Cells are too small to be seen by the human eye and must be viewed under a microscope. Cells are living organisms that eat food for energy and build body matter. The combination of cells forms other organisms in our body. There are particular cells that combine to construct bones, muscles, and skin. These groups of cells are supported by nerve cells that form our brain. Cells are responsible for the way we look, the things we are able to do, and for protecting us against germs. All living things - plants and animals - are made up of cells, A cell is made up of fats, sugars, proteins, and nucleic acids such as DNA. When we eat, we feed the cells in our body, Food is taken in and broken down in our stomach and intestines, The blood carries these smaller particles of food to our cells, Our cells then take out the nutrients they require to build themselves and other new cells. DNA consists of minute strings of genes lined up in each cell in a ladder- like pattern. The genes are what make proteins which are the building blocks for cells and the determiners of the various activities of the cells. Genes are what make human beings, as a species, look similar; they are also what give human beings their distinct features and talents. Cells are covered by a membrane, but inside there are different organs. The nucleus, in the middle of the cell, stores the packages of genes called chromosomes. There are 46 chromosomes in 23 Pairs in each nucleus of each cell in our body. The chromosomes come in pairs because they represent the combined contribution of the father and the mother from whom we get our characteristics. Have you ever had someone tell you how much you look like one of your parents? Height, weight, colour of hair, eyes, voice, and physical expressions are some of the commonalities you may possess as a result of your gene pool For each underlined word from the passage listed below, circle the appropriate synonym according to its meaning in the sentence in which it appears. 1. viewed seen examined 2. matter mass purpose 3. forms shapes builds 4. particular odd certain Clauses can be independent - they function as a simple sentence on their own. The truth is that of the more than 350 species of sharks, only about 30 of them are a threat to humans. Most sharks are garbage pickers - they patrol the ocean for leftovers of dead and wounded fish. Actually, like city street sweepers, they keep the ocean clean. The three species that are responsible for most human deaths are the tiger shark, the bull shark, and the largest and most feared - the great white. A great white, also known as “white death”, ranges from 5 to 7 metres in length, and weighs between 900 and 2,700 kg (1 to 3 tons). The great white finds its human prey off the coasts of central and southern California, and Australia, However, it prefers seals and whales that are fatty to human beings who are muscular. Swimming at a speed of 16 to 20 km per hour, the shark usually attacks its prey from behind or beneath. Tests on human-like dummies dressed like divers indicated that the great white was more interested in the dummies placed on a surfboard than those floating upright in the water. One theory suggests that the dummies on surfboards closely resemble seals, the preferred diet of the shark. If you think the best way to escape from a shark attack is fo remain in the boat, you’re wrong. Sharks have been known to attack boats. In one case, a basking shark measuring 12 metres and weighing 15 tons actually attacked a steamer carrying over 200 passengers. Luckily, no one was hurt and the ship was undamaged. It is believed that the electrical fields emanating from the boat attracted the shark, fooling if into thinking it was closing in on its prey. wicatont Aen Match the facts. Write the letters only. Because ee we wentto-the beach, The official beginning of the new millennium was January 1, 2001 even though the world celebrated it one year earlier. Clearly, we were anxious to enter the next thousand-year period, and to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of the previous thousand years. Our lifetimes represent an insignificant period in time when compared to the age of the earth and our universe. The earth is about 4.5 billion years old. The universe is thought to be close to 12 billion years old. Scientists believe that Homo sapiens (mankind) have existed for two hundred millennia (200,000 years). Considering that a single billion year period represents one million millennia, our time on earth is merely a moment in time. Why then was there so much fuss over the year 2000? The answer lies in the fact that most people use the Gregorian calendar which began 2000 years ago and places us in the second millennium. The Gregorian year 2000 is the year 4698 on the Chinese calendar, 5760 on the Hebrew calendar, and 1420 on the Muslim calendar. The first Roman calendar had only ten months. This calendar was not in sync with the seasons and so the emporer, Pompilius, added two extra months - Januarlus and Februarius. Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar later named two of the original months, July and August, in their own honour. Hence, we have the twelve months of the year as we know them. It was Julius Caesar who changed to a solar calendar and added one- quarter of a day to the 365-day year. Because this adjustment still did not coincide with the seasons, Caesar added 80 days in 46 B.C., making the year 445 days long. This became known as “Annus Confusionis” (the Year of Confusion). The Julian calendar was used in Europe for over fifteen hundred years until Pope Gregory XIll, with the aid of a mathematician and astronomer named Clavius, made the changes that resulted in today’s Gregorian calendar. mitierior tA Fill in each blank with the best answer from the choices provided. This accomplishment did not come easily - it was the result of years of perseverance and preparation. From the time that Yuir Gagarin circled the earth in a spaceship when Roberta was sixteen, Roberta was determined to be part of the space Programme. She was further motivated when Valentina Tereshkova (a Russian cosmonaut) became the first female in space. From an early age, Roberta was fascinated with outer space. She won numerous science fair competitions in high school, and distinguished herself as a top student. She obtained a bachelor of science degree, and went on to obtain three more degrees in pathology, neurobiology, and medicine. By the age of 36, she had completed her education and training and had also become a pilot. She became an assistant professor of medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. One day Roberta heard a radio announcement stating that Canada was embarking on a space programme - anyone interested in becoming an astronaut was invited to apply. Roberta wasted no time; she applied immediately. Over 4,000 applications were sent in, but only six were chosen Roberta was among them. She was sent to the NASA training facility to learn to fly American spacecraft. In 1984, a Canadian was chosen to be part of an astronaut team, but the candidate was Mare Garneau. and not Roberta Bondar. In fact, it wasn’t until eight years later that Roberta got her chance to fly in space. Her shuttle travelled at the rate of 8 km/second orbiting the earth in 90 minutes. During the flight, Roberta’s duties included analyzing and examining fellow astronauts for backbone strain and stretching. She continued this work after her duty as an astronaut. She later became involved in the preservation of the environment - an interest likely developed from looking at the earth from space. In 1998, Roberta was named to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. Canada’s Nafional Sport 30 L__ | Whlle It is true that lacrosse is the oldest sport played in Canada, it is difficult to argue that hockey is not the national passion. The exact origin of hockey is unknown. It is logical to assume that hockey began in northern Europe, possibly Britain or France, since in these locations, field hockey has been a major summer sport for over 500 years. When ponds and lakes froze in the winter, a winter version of field hockey - Played on ice - would have been a natural transition. Historical research uncovered a form of ice sport in Holland called “kolven” which was later adopted by the English. In the British version of “kolven”, players used a wooden stick to knock a cork ball around on ice surfaces. The French term “hoquet”, which means bent stick, may well have been the derivative of the term “hockey”. Canada, with its frigid winter weather, was a natural location for the arrival of hockey to North America. As early as 1870, British soldiers stationed in Halifax are reported to have organized hockey games on frozen ponds around the city. Hockey matches were organized by students from McGill University in Montreal (also in the 1870's), and by the mid-1880's, a league Consisting of four teams began in Kingston, Ontario. Soon thereafter, games between Toronto and Montreal became a regular event. In 1892, the Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley, donated a silver bowl to be awarded to the best amateur team in Canada. This was the origin of the Stanley Cup, the much coveted trophy that NHL teams fight for each year. The first professional league was created in 1904 in the United States. It folded shortly afterwards, but the National Hockey Association (NHA) emerged a few years later. The Pacific Coast League soon followed, and the stage was set for a transcontinental championship with the winner getting the Stanley Cup. World War | disrupted organized hockey in Canada, but at the end of the war, a bigger and better hockey league was formed - The National Hockey League (NHL). The season began on December 19, 1917, and Toronto went on to win the league championship that premiere season defeating the Pacific Coast League’s champion Vancouver Millionaires. The popularity of hockey today is worldwide.
