Experiment No. 03

Study and identify the damping conditions in second

Experiment Name
order system using MATLAB and Simulink.
OBJECTIVES

1. To understand the condition for second order transfer

function in MATLAB.

2. Identify and visualize the system response using MATLAB.

THEORY:
LAB WORKS:
1. Show the step and ramp response of the System 1 to 4 and
identify the system condition. (show all the steps)

In Matlab, we created code for systems 1-4, each denoted by

letters A-D. For each system, coefficients for the numerator (b)
and the coefficient of 's' (a) are represented as a1, b1 for
system 1, a2, b2 for system 2, and so forth. The variable 's' is
defined as the transfer function variable. Subsequently, we
generate and plot transfer functions for all the systems.
The block representation in Simulink for all the systems:

Now, for system 1:

Ramp Response
For system 2:
Ramp response:

For system 3:
Ramp response
For system 4:
Ramp response
2. Add b = given value + (last digit of your ID+1) and repeat lab work 1.
Here
b1 = 12 + 1 + 1 = 14
b2 = 25 + 1 + 1 = 27
b3 = 27 + 1 + 1 = 29
b4 = 80 + 1 + 1 = 82

Similarly, the MATLAB code for these systems

The block representation in Simulink for all the systems:

For system 1:

For system 2:

For system 3:

For system 4:

3. Compare the results.

The results for both lab work 1 and lab work 2 are similar and has no major
differences.
For both lab works;
System 1 is stable and underdamped.
System 2 is stable and overdamped.
System 3 is stable and underdamped.
System 4 is stable and underdamped.

4. Make system 2 undamped in step response (take b from lab work 2).
Recalculate ‘a’ if you have to.

To make system 2 undamped, zeta needs to be equal to zero. So, if we take a = 0,

the required condition can be achieved.
The system is stable and undamped ae the damping factor, zeta, is 0.
