    The objectives of this project are to rehabilitate deteriorated infrastructures and relevant

    facilities of the existing railway between Yangon city and Mandalay city and modernize them to

    increase the safety and speed of train operation, to reduce transportation cost, and to increase

    passenger and freight transportation, all of which will contribute to the national economic

    development and improve the quality of life of the residents. The proposed technical targets of

    this project are to achieve a safe maximum train running speed of 100 km/h and to provide a

    train operation service of less than 8 hours for the section from Yangon to Mandalay. The

    construction stage of this project has been started since the middle of 2018 and it is still under

    ongoing period.
