Construction Work Project Title : RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION :SEREMBAN TO GEMAS ELECTRIFIED DOUBLE TRACKING (SGEDT) Client : KERETAPI TANAH MELAYU BERHAD (KTMB) Contractor : IRCON INTERNATIONAL LTD. MALAYSIA Project Management Consultant: KLIA CONSULTANCY SERVICES SDN. BHD

INTRODUCTION OF THE SGEDT PROJECT The Government recognises that Malaysias rail network system is one of the transportation infrastructure systems that play a vital role in fuelling the continual industrial and economic development of the nation. Consequently the government is committed to the modernization of railway infrastructure to cope with the growth of the economy and the needs of the rail users. The overall thrust of the railway development programme is aimed at increasing haulage capacity and enhancing operational safety for both freight and passenger services. In line with the above aspirations, the Seremban to Gemas Electrified Double Tracking (SGEDT) project has now been awarded to IRCON International in December 2007 by the Government of Malaysia. This sector covers an existing route length of approximately 103.00km and is part of the overall future double tracking to Johor Bahru.

PROJECT BACKGROUND The Project will be carried out on a Fixed Lump Sum, Design and Build basis, using the standard JKR Design & Build Conditions of Contract. The Government of Malaysia, through Ministry of Transport issued Letter of Acceptance vide letter ref. no: KP/W/0.449/20 Jld.4 (45) dated 26 December 2007 to the Contractor, IRCON International Limited. The Original Contract Period is 48 months, with the section from Seremban up to and inclusive of Sungai Gadut Station to be completed and operational within 30 months.

DESIGN PRINCIPLE Two new tracks are to be constructed, whilst maintaining the distance between the centerline of the future track and the existing track generally at 9.0m. The objective is to minimize disruptions to train operations and maintain safety during construction. Meet the SON requirements, especially the maximum design speed of 160km/hr wherever possible. Maximum use of KTMB ROW (Right of Way) to minimum land acquisition. Minimum disruption or demolishing of the existing built up areas. Avoid disruption to major utilities such as Petronas Gas Utility pipelines. To maximum wherever possible the retention of existing overhead bridges or other structures.

STATEMENT OF NEED REQUIREMENTS As far as possible and practicable the design parameters have complied with the SON requirements and also the Governments preliminary design. The SON requires a design speed of 160km/hr. However, in locations with constraints in built up areas with no room for acquisition as clearly indicated in the Government preliminary design, this speed cannot be achieved. The SON also requires that the maximum cant and cant deficiency to be 100mm and 70mm respectively. Cant provided is for design speed.
