Rationale: Math is one of the Spanish courses within the bilingual program. Lessons will be taught primarily in
Spanish, however there will be English when introducing new topics so students are aware of vocabulary
in both Spanish and English. English may also be used for clarifications so that there is a continuity of
the students mathematical knowledge between both English and Spanish.
This unit will be going over all of the number sense topics. At the beginning of the unit there will be a
focus on reviewing and introducing new numeracy topics while also reviewing terms and numbers in
Spanish. Once students have a strong base on placement values, ways of representing numbers, and
decimals.
Classes will be structured in an “I do, we do, you do” format. Classes will start with a short teaching,
followed by an example that we do as a class. Lastly students will then be practicing with the material
either by themselves or in a small group setting. If there is a lot of material to go through in order to
teach, class will be broken up to have teaching and activities scattered between each other. Additional
supports either individually or in small group settings will be provided during working times.
In addition to math class, the class does daily morning math where the students work on a variety of
different problems. With this in mind we will be continually spiraling through the curriculum and reviewing
these topics as well as others.
It is also important to note that this is a 4/5 class. The intention with this class is to teach towards the
grade 5 curriculum. With this is mind differentiation will be provided for the grade 4’s and for the grade
5’s that will require differentiation. Furthermore grade 4’s will be assessed on their appropriate grade
level outcomes. With the focus of this on numeracy, place value, numbers (in spanish) and decimals.
The variance in the outcomes between grade 4 and 5 curriculum is not as different as it is in other units.
Differentiation will include having different exercises available when needed, manipulatives available for
use as well as reference charts. In addition to this additional instruction will be given to students or
groups of students when needed.
Methods A variety of methods will be included within this unit.
● Direct instruction and discussion-based instruction will be used to introduce topics and to dive
deeper into topics with which students are already familiar. Spanish will be the primary language
used, however English will be used when introducing terms so students are familiar with both
languages.
● Problem based learning will be used in order to dive deeper into topics and allow students for real
life applications of math
● Educational games will also be used in order to strengthen fundamental math skills focused upon
numeracy.
Approx. Sept. 18 – ~Oct. 20

Targeted While we will not go through all of the learning outcomes of numeracy we will be focusing on place value

Assessment available through this link.
Formative assessments will be done through: Students using whiteboards, games, group activities, exit
slips, regular thumbs up assessment or fist to five as well as in class observations.
