CHAPTER 3. SEPARATION OF SUBSTANCES

INSTRUCTIONS-ALL THE STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO COPY THE NOTES IN THE

FAIRNOTEBOOK.

I. Define the following-

1. Handpicking- the process used to separate slightly larger particles from amixture of two or more
solids by hand, is called handpicking. For example, stone pieces are separated from wheat or rice by
hand picking.

2. Threshing- Threshing is the process of separating grains from the stalk of theplants. In this
process, the stalks are beaten to free the grain seeds.

3. Winnowing- The process of separating heavier and lighter components of amixture by wind or by
blowing air is called winnowing. This method is used byfarmers to separate lighter husk particles from
heavier seeds of grains.

4. Sedimentation- Sedimentation is the settling down of heavier componentsof a mixture after water
is added to it.

5. Decantation- When the water, along with the dust is removed aftersedimentation the process is
called decantation.

6. Saturated solution- A solution in which no more solute can be dissolved atthat temperature is
called a saturated solution.

II. Answer the following questions-

Q1) Why do we need to separate different components of a mixture? Give two examples.

Ans) We need to separate different components of a mixture to obtain usefulcomponents from the non-
useful or harmful components.
Examples-Tea leaves are separated from tea, Pebbles are separated from rice and pulses.

Q2) How is common salt obtained from sea water?

Ans) Common salt is obtained from sea water by the process of evaporation. In this process, the sea
water is allowed to stand in shallow pits. The sun’s heat evaporates the water slowly and a mixture of
salts is left behind. From this mixture of salts, the common salt is obtained by further purification.

Q3) Is it possible to separate sugar mixed with wheat flour? If yes, how will you do it?
Ans) Yes, it is possible to separate sugar mixed with wheat flour by the process of sieving. When the
mixture of sugar and wheat flour is allowed to pass through a sieve, only the fine particles of wheat
flour are able to pass through the holes of the sieve, whereas the bigger particles of sugar remain on the
sieve. This is how sugar can be separated from the mixture of wheat flour and sugar.

Q4) How will you separate sand and water from their mixture?
Ans) We can separate sand and water by decantation. The water obtainedafter decantation can be
further purified by filtration.

Q5) Name the methods that are used to separate the following mixtures.
a. Sawdust and water.
b. Rice and salt
c. Red and green beads (of the same size)
Ans) Methods used to separate the mixtures are-
a. Sawdust and water- Filtration.
b. Rice and salt- Sieving.
c. Red and green beads (of the same size)- Hand picking.

III. Differentiate between the following.

Q1) Evaporation and condensation.

Ans)
Evaporation Condensation
Evaporation is the process in which aliquid Condensation is the process in whichvapours
gets converted into its vapour get converted into its liquid
form upon heating. form upon cooling.

For example-Change of water into For example-Change of water vapours

water vapours. into water.

Q2) Sieving and filtration

Ans)
Sieving Filtration.

Sieving is the process by which the Filtration is the process in which a solid
components of a mixture that are of different is separated from a mixture of insoluble solid
sizes are separated. and a liquid.

A sieve is used in the process of sieving. A filter such as a filter paper is used inthe
process of filtration.

Example- Sieving is used in separationof Example-Filtration is used inseparation of tea

pebbles from sand. leaves from tea.

IV. Give reasons.

Q1) We should add ice to the lemonade after dissolving sugar.
Ans) We should add ice to the lemonade after dissolving sugar in it, because the rate of dissolution
decreases on decreasing temperature. When we add iceto the lemonade, its temperature decreases and
at lower temperature the sugar does not get dissolved easily.

V. REASON AND ASSERTION QUESTIONS:

This consists of two statements – Assertion (A) and Reason (R), Answer the questions selecting the
appropriate option given below:

(a) Both A and R is true, and R is the correct explanation of A.

(b) Both A and R is true, and R is not the correct explanation of A.

(c) A is True but R is false.

(d) A is False but R is true.

a. R: teacher dissolved a small amount of solid copper sulphate in a tumbler half filled with water.
A: to get back solid copper sulphate from the solution

Ans: a
b. A: condensation plays an important role in water cycle.
R: The process of conversion of water vapor into its liquid form is called condensation. This results in
the formation of rain drops and hence rainfall.

Ans: a

c. A: To separate grain from stalks are beaten to free the grain seeds.
R: Winnowing is a method to separate grains from husk

Ans: b

VI. Picture based questions:

Q1) What does the above picture depicts?

Ans: The above picture depicts the process of Decantation.

Q2) How the oil can be separated?

Ans: Let the mixture stand for some time, as oil is lighter than water it will float over the surface of
water. We can later decant the oil from the mixture as it is floating over water. Hence oil is separated.

VII. CASE STUDY:

Q1) Both Sarika and Mohan were asked to make salt solution. Sarika was given a teaspoonful of salt
and half a glass of water, whereas Mohan was given twenty teaspoons full of salt and half a glass of
water.
a) How would they make salt solutions?
Ans: They will mix salt with water to make salt solution.

b) Who would be able to prepare saturated solution?

Ans: Mohan’s solution would be saturated because some salt would remain undissolved and settle
at the bottom of the glass.
