4 - Simple Present Tense

Rules for forming the verbs of the third-person singular pronouns (he/she/it) in the
simple present:

 Add “-S”

For most verbs that end with consonants or vowels, add "-s" to the base form of the verb

- He sings beautifully on stage.


- She dances gracefully at the ballet recital.
- It barks loudly at strangers.
- He runs fast in the race.
- She laughs heartily at the jokes.
- It swims gracefully in the ocean.
- He plays the guitar skillfully.
- She writes poems with passion.
- It climbs trees to find food.
- He cooks delicious meals for his family.
 Add “-ES”

For verbs ending in "s", "sh", "ch", "x" or "o", add "-es" to the base form of the verb

- She fixes her toy nicely.


- He watches the bird fly.
- She washes her hands before eating.
- It rushes through the forest.  Could you please explain me “rush”?
- He goes to the park happily.
- He mixes the colors well.
- He boxes with his friend.
- She approaches the baby gently.
- Arthur does his homework
- Diana crosses her fingers.

 Add “-IES”

For verbs ending in a consonant + Y, change the "y" to "-ies"

- She replies to all emails promptly (reply)


- The teacher terrifies her students (terrify)
- The teenager dries his hair (dry)
- It tries to reach the top of the shelf (try)
- He envies his sister's talent (envy)

 The Unique Cases of 'Have' and 'Be' in the Simple Present Tense

Two essential verbs, "have" and "be”, are exceptions to the “-S”, “-ES” and “-IES” rules.
Have with he/she/it turns into HAS. The Verb to Be form for he/she/it is “IS”, for I is
“AM” and for you/we/they is “ARE”

He has a new car.


She has a lovely smile.
It has been a long day.
He is a talented musician.
She is my best friend.
We are happy.
