Cavity Mutiny

- Is one of the early uprisings of the Filipinos against the Spanish colonial
- Around 200 Filipino troops and workers of Fort San Felipe, a Spanish arsenal in Cavite, rose
up in an attempt to overthrow the Spanish government
- It happened on January 20, 1872
- Due to the removal of privileges of those Filipino workers at Fort San Felipe, such as
exemption from the tribute (or tax(?)) and forced labor
- The uprising was led by Fernando La Madrid, a Filipino illustrado

GOMBURZA

- The execution of the three Filipino priest


o Jose Burgos
o Mariano Gomez
o Jacinto Zamora
- They were accused as the leaders or the heads of the Cavity Mutiny by the captured
mutineers
- These priests were part of the Secularization Movement
o A campaign against the Spanish Friars
o A movement which gives rights to Filipino Clergymen to head parishes
- The execution of the GOMBURZA awakened the strong spirit of anger and resentment
among Filipinos, including Dr. Jose Rizal

Spanish’s Perspective

- It was viewed as a planned conspiracy due to the statement stated by the captured
mutineers of the cavity mutiny.
- During a trial, Francisco Zaldua, a captured mutineer, stated that he was told by the Basa
Brothers, the government of Father Burgos, that they would bring a navy fleet from the
United States to assist the Revolution
- The friars held a conference and decided to get rid of Burgos
- Since Zamora and Gomez were close associates of Burgos, they were also included on the
alligation
