PEFORTS DGE18 Reflection Paper

During the start of the term, I didn’t exactly know what to expect when I enrolled into this
subject. In the past terms during my freshmen year, my P.E. classes were similar to each other yet pretty
far from what I was used to during high school. I adjusted to that certain system. But with this course, it
made me think about high school once again. This was because volleyball was a central sport when it
came to my old classmates. This, however, didn’t mean that everyone was good at it. Like me. Sadly, I
was an odd one out when it came to sports, either being a bench warmer or water girl for the team. I
was satisfied with this role, however, since I knew where my strengths lie. Nevertheless, I was still
interested in trying it out and got a bit of experience from my friends who were very enthusiastic about
it. Which then led me to knowing the basics of the said sport, making it one of my preferred sport games
to actually participate in.

When I discovered that volleyball would be the sport our class would be participating in, I was
relieved. This would stem from the fact that basketball was the other option, which I was less proficient
at. However, I was then intimidated by the vast skills and knowledge the rest of the class had, seeing as a
lot of them were either active players or literal school athletes of the game. Instead of feeling
discouraged, I felt motivated to at least try my best and have fun with it. I reminded myself that I was
never really good at the sport, so I shouldn’t pressure or beat myself up over the fact that I wouldn’t be
able to do that good of a job. I then noticed that I wasn’t the only one underexperienced when it came
to volleyball. In fact, I had somewhat more knowledge than most of the classmates I came to know. I
then decided that I would cheer both myself and the one around me, since I know that volleyball is in
fact a team sport, which was another reason why I enjoyed it so much. It wasn’t only you out there on
the court, you could also rely on your teammates to catch the ball and fill in your shortcomings when
needed. Even though I couldn’t bond with everyone in my class, I was happy enough that I could
experience the joys of playing volleyball once more.

Despite the fact that I complained and wasn’t able to perform as well as most, I know I did my
very best and pushed my limits. This course took me back to the days when I was still learning the basics
of volleyball from my friends and had fun little matches with them. I was reminded of why I chose this
sport as the one I would try my very best in learning in the first place, to the point I even bought my very
own ball long ago. I rediscovered the mechanics of receiving, serving, tossing, and ball control; I was
reminded of the values of courage and sportsmanship; and rekindled the flame of motivating and lifting
each other up. In the end, I look forward to playing volleyball as a fun little hobby in the near future as
well.
