Motivation is a crucial factor in language learning, and it plays a

significant role in determining the readiness of learners to communicate.

According to Gardner (1985:10), motivation is a key consideration in

determining the preparedness of learners to communicate. 1 Motivation is

responsible for achievement in language learning, and without adequate

motivation, learners with distinctive talents will not be able to fulfill such

objectives, even if they have a good curriculum and/or teachers. Therefore,

language teachers should identify the students' motivation and make the

lesson relevant and enjoyable to enhance their motivation and improve

be able to express their feeling and ideas orally in English, they still use

Indonesian or minang language as their mother tongue in communication

during English class.

In competence achievements of speaking in senior high school,

students must be able to pronounce words in English correctly, and can be

understood by the other person when using English. There are various

activities that establish this kind of atmosphere, game is just one of them.

Playing games is a good chance to repeat material in a way which is

boosting and not intimidating. If the teacher adds the matter of challenge

and match into it and serves to the needs of a larges range of students and

learning techniques which is suitable for them, the outcomes will be a

great accomplishment.

Despite the efforts in the educational framework, speaking

proficiency remains a challenge for many students. In this context, the

"One-Minute Talk" strategy has emerged as a potential tool for enhancing

speaking abilities. One-minute talk strategy has emerged as a potent tool

for enhancing speaking abilities in various contexts. This concise yet

impactful approach emphasizes the art of succinctly conveying

information, ideas, or messages within a strict 60-second timeframe. By

the one-minute talk strategy equips individuals with the ability to captivate

audiences and communicate with precision, making it a valuable asset for

personal and professional growth.

However, there is limited research exploring the effectiveness of

the One-Minute Talk strategy specifically within the context of Grade Ten

students at SMA N 2 Lubuk Basung. Thus, this study aims to investigate

the impact of the One-Minute Talk strategy on the speaking ability of

Grade Ten students in two different classes at SMA N 2 Lubuk Basung.

Based to the preliminary research that conducted by doing

interview to the teacher and some of the ten grade students on the 12th and

16 January 2023, there were several problems that occur in English class

especially in speaking activity. Speaking activity is conducted by the

teacher with follow the instruction in the text book and also with the

teacher itself by conveying text. Same as other skills, the students also

have the difficulty in speaking activity.

The first problem is the lack of motivation of children to be fluent

in speaking English, the lack of motivation in learning makes children not

enthusiastic in undergoing learning in the classroom. Lack of motivation

makes children less interested and feel that they do not understand the

learning that is going on in the classroom.

The second problem, the lack of vocabulary that students have,

this makes students feel that language learning is difficult because they do

not understand what the teacher means, students feel uninterested in

language learning because they find it difficult to follow the learning

explained by the teacher.

The third problem is the students communication skills, some

students might struggle with effective communication, such as expressing

their thoughts clearly, articulating ideas,or maintaining eye contact during

conversations. This can lead to misunderstanding and hinder their ability

to connect with others.

communication skills are the main challenges faced by students in learning

English. To address these issues, educators can use motivational strategies

to create a supportive and engaging learning environment.

students to speak English for one minute on a topic of their choice. This

strategy can help students improve their speaking skills, expand their

vocabulary, and boost their confidence in using English. By using

motivational strategies such as the One Minute Talk, educators can help

students become more motivated, engaged, and successful in their English

language learning journey. The researcher assumes that introducing and
