CHAPTER IV

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

A. Findings

In this chapter, the researcher provided the result of the research that

was gathered from the sample. The sample of this study 38 students that was

randomly chosen from XI grade in SMAN I VII KOTO SUNGAI SARIK.

The instrument of this research was closed questionnaire which was consisted

of 20 items. The researcher provided the result of the research into two

sections which are description of the data and analysis of the data.

1. Description of the Data

There were 20 items in the questionnaire. The questionnaire was

divided into 6 sections based on the advantages of group discussion. They

are Understanding, Critical Thinking, Personal Growth, Communication

Skills, Group and Teamwork Skills, and Self-Direction in Learning. The

result of the questionnaire can be viewed on the table below:

2. Analysis of the Data

In this section, the students’ perception was analyzed by each

advantages of the group discussion. Then, at the end of this section, the

researcher provided the overall result of the students’ perception toward

the group discussion. There were 6 advantages of group discussion that

were used as the guideline of the questionnaire. Each of them was

described as follow:

Based on the chart above, few students (28,95%) responded strongly agree

to the items of the questionnaire that were related with understanding. Most of the

students (63,16%) responded agree. Almost none of the students (5,26%)

responded neutral. Almost none of the students (2,63%) responded disagree.

Finally, none of the students (0%) responded strongly disagree. It can be

interpreted most of the students agree that the benefits of discussion can improve

understanding of speaking skills, express opinions and respond to friends'

opinions in English. Meanwhile, some respondents agree with this. However, a

small proportion of respondents stated that they were neutral and disagreed. And

none of the respondents stated that they strongly disagreed with this.

Based on the chart above, few students (26,32%) responded strongly agree

to the items of the questionnaire that were related with critical thinking. Most of

the students (61,18%) responded agree. Almost none of the students (9,87%)

responded neutral. Almost none of the students (2,63%) responded disagree.

Finally, none of the students (0%) responded strongly disagree. It can be

interpreted most of the respondents were agree that the benefits of discussion can

help critical thinking. Meanwhile, some respondents agree with this. However, a

small proportion of respondents stated that they were neutral and disagreed. And

none of the respondents stated that they strongly disagreed with this.

Based on the chart above, half students (40,35%) responded strongly agree

to the items of the questionnaire that were related with personal growth. Half of

the students (52,63%) responded agree. Almost none of the students (6,14%)

responded neutral. Almost none of the students (0,88%) responded disagree.

Finally, none of the students (0%) responded strongly disagree. It can be

interpreted that half of the respondent responded strongly agree and agree that the

benefits of discussion can help personal growth. And some respondents also said

they agreed. However, a small proportion of respondents stated that they were

neutral and disagreed. And none of the respondents stated that they strongly

disagreed with this.

Based on the chart above, few students (31,58%) responded strongly agree

to the items of the questionnaire that were related with communication skill. Most

of the students (62,5%) responded agree. Almost none of the students (5,26%)

responded neutral. Almost none of the students (0,66%) responded disagree.

Finally, none of the students (0%) responded strongly disagree. It can be

interpreted that most of the respondents agree that the benefits of discussion can

help communication skills.

Based on the chart above, few students (36,18%) responded strongly agree

to the items of the questionnaire that were related with group and teamwork skill.

Half of the students (54,61%) responded agree. Almost none of the students

(9,21%) responded neutral. none of the students (0%) responded disagree. Finally,

none of the students (0%) responded strongly disagree. It can be interpreted that

half of the respondents agree that the benefits of discussion can help improve

group and teamwork skills.

Based on the chart above, few students (30,92%) responded strongly agree

to the items of the questionnaire that were related with self-direction in learning.

Most of the students (64,47%) responded agree. Almost none of the students

(4,61%) responded neutral. None of the students (0%) responded disagree.

Finally, none of the students (0%) responded strongly disagree. It can be

interpreted that most of the respondents agree that the benefits of discussion can

help improve self-direction in learning.
