Prepositions
1. What are prepositions?
Prepositions are usually small words used to show a relationship in space or time or a logical relationship
between two or more people, places or things.

There are hardly any rules as to when to use which preposition. The only way to learn prepositions is
looking them up in a dictionary, reading a lot in English and learning useful phrases off by heart.
Although prepositions are hard to generalize with separate rules, there is one simple rule about them.

2. Rule: They are followed by a noun/noun phrase or pronoun.

• Noun (dog, money, love) • Pronoun (you, him, us)
• Proper Noun (name) (London, Mary) • Noun Group (my first car)
• Gerund (swimming)

If we want to follow a preposition with a verb, we must use the "-ing" form which is really a gerund or verb in
noun form.
E;X I am interested in travelling to unknown places

Subject + Verb Preposition "noun"

➢ The pen is on the table.
➢ He lives in England.
➢ Henry is looking for you.
➢ The newspaper is under your green book.
➢ Pascal is used to English people.

➢ Give that to me.

3. Three Groups
For the purpose of study, sometimes prepositions are put into three groups as follows:

a. Prepositions of time.
b. Prepositions of place, position and direction.
c. Prepositions for other relationships.

2
There are over 100 prepositions in English.
The most common single-word prepositions are:
about above across after against along
around among as at beside by
between beyond before behind below beneath
down during despite except for from
