Lesson Title:
Sight Reading
Objectives
- Students will be able to perform at sight simple unfamiliar musical works with accurate
pitches and rhythms at a steady tempo
- Students will identify advanced key signatures in the clef appropriate to their instrument
- Students will perform simple rhythm patterns using music notation
State Standards:
- Anchor Standard 5:

Context:
This lesson will be for a high school band class. The reasoning for teaching this lesson is because
many students are not able to sight read music at a advanced level

students will have knowledge of each other's instruments so they will be able to help each other

Procedures:
The teacher directed portion of this will be having students sit around the smart board while I use
sightreadingfactory to pull up sight reading examples and having students do their sight reading
in front of me. I will then be able to give them immediate feedback. We will do multiple
examples until our time runs out.
The collaborative portion will be the students getting in groups of two and using musescore to
write out a small 4 measure excerpt for their partner to sight read. They will both get 3 minutes
to write them out then give the other their device and then they will have to sight read it. Repeat
this process as much as time allows.
The independent digital portion will be students will put on headphones and turn on a
metronome using an application of their choosing and find examples to sight read on
sightreadingfactory. They will then play it back after sight reading it and try to mimic this until
they get it right. Once they get it right they will move on to another randomized example.
