Mechanical Engineers use computers more extensively than any other physical scientists. Computers are used to help in the
design process, computers control manufacturing equipment and robots, and computers are used heavily in the fields of fluid
mechanics, solid mechanics and heat transfer. Because many fields of mechanical engineering are so mathematically
challenging computers are extremely helpful and are used constantly. We are not the engineers who build the computers, we
just use them. If you like to use computers there is no better field than mechanical engineering. The power of modern
computers makes it possible for mechanical engineers to study proposed aircraft and car body designs before companies go
the expense of actually building physical models. Using computer simulations engineers can visualize the fluid flow and
temperatures in areas that are experimentally inaccessible such as the inside the heart and the inside of a car engine.
Computers are used in research to extend investigation beyond the limits of an experimental setup. It is often much quicker
to run a computer experiment than a physical one. When computer investigation is combined with careful experiments and
sound theory the productivity of computer research can be tremendous.

UMass Dartmouth provides many computer clusters for students to use. Academic computing services (the central computer
provider on campus) provides computers and help to students doing word processing, using spread sheets and other generic
software. In addition to this, however, the mechanical engineering department has computer labs specifically dedicated to
undergraduate students in mechanical engineering.

Use of Computer in Aviation Industry

Computers are the most necessary part of life in this era; we are totally dependent on Computers in our daily life as we have
need of computers in every field of life, Aviation is that industry which uses computers in very large scale. Aviation is the
fastest industry, human speed and manually doing work is not efficient for proper and fast results.

From preparing tickets to Air-craft manufacturing, Computers are originally that point from which all aviation revolves
around. Today the world is fast and technical, just because of Computer. Use of computer was involved in Aviation just
after Wright Brothers flew at Kitty Hawk. Gyroscopes were introduced to Aircraft which is known as Auto-Pilot. It’s a
complete use of computer for operations. Even in World War Two, B-17 and B-29 Bombers was calculating devices which
were connected to Auto-Pilot, which controlled Aircraft to remain steady during bombardment. Computers were used in
1950 for Wind tunnel test.
Aircraft manufacturers started using computers for Designs and accuracy. Designing a plane such as a large passenger
airplane is an immensely complex job involving thousands of engineers and ultimately hundreds of thousands of pages of
blueprint (planning of design). In 1980's, Boeing decided to build a new large passenger jet and the program's managers
made a fundamental and drastic decision to design the plane entirely on computers, without using traditional paper designs.
The result was the Boeing 777, which first flew in 1994 which many people referred to as "the first 21st Century Jet." B-777
was the first Aircraft based completely on Computer.

Computers are used in every department of Aviation. For ticket reservation, computers are used. Now the technology has
become so advanced, for the ease of costumers Airlines are providing e-ticketing services through internet and computers.

For flight display in Airports, computers are used, which is the important part of Airport. With the help of computer and
internet now passengers have easy access to flight confirmation, flight status inquiries while sitting in home or office.

For boarding a passenger, computers are used. It definitely not is so quickly without computers. Number of flights and
passenger operates a day, fast and accurate because of Computer.

Airport Security force use computer for Safety of the region. ASF use scanning system to detect any unlawful act, primary
source is through computers. Security of entire region can’t do without computers.

Flight planning is an example of using computer in Direct Aviation related to operations. Flight Officers use computers for
their flight plan, a big flight plan just complete in half an hour with the help of computers. Without computers it might take
up to 4-5 hours. Computerized flight planning is fuel efficient, while manually is not. Computerized flight planning system is
able to provide the most cost and time effective RAD compliant route.

ATC uses Computers for perfect and accurate direction, handle all landing, takeoff and ground traffic
from tower with the help of computers. As an aircraft travels through a given airspace division, it is
monitored by the one or more air traffic controllers responsible for that division. The controllers
monitor this plane and give instructions to the pilot. As the plane leaves that airspace division and
enters another, the air traffic controller passes it off to the controllers responsible for the new airspace
division, just with technology and computers.
Onboard entertainment system is a perfect use of computer during flight. Airlines offer different
entertainment facilities to make their costumers facilitated with technology. Wi-Fi service onboard for
passengers is also an example of advance computer and technology system.

Aircrafts are coming with advanced technologies. Smarter screens, glass cockpit everything is
becoming smarter with advancement in Computers. A glass cockpit is an aircraft cockpit that features
electronic (digital) flight instrument displays, typically large LCD screens. Airbus is going to
make Smarter Skies vision 2050, just because of technology and Advance computer. With the vision to
make pilot less cockpit, that will just operate on Autopilot and Artificial Intelligence.

In Aviation industry computers are also used for Aircraft engineering, Scanning Aircraft before and
after flight, fleet managing, and keeping records of Aircraft, employee’s data base record and for
many other options. HR department uses computers for keeping records, for making job posted on
their website, career built in, and for many other reasons.

Hence computers are used in every department and every field of Aviation, From Airports, Airlines,
CAA, and Aircraft manufactures to ground handling agencies and Aviation business. Computer
Technology is so built into our lives that it’s a part of the surrounding of every artist.
