Reading Comprehension

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:

1. What is that chirp? Is that from a sparrow or a parrot? What is that black bird? Is that a
crow or a koel? If such questions fascinate you, then you could make bird-watching your
hobby. If you want to study birds as a science and make it your profession, you could
become an ornithologist.

2. Bird-watching was popularised in India by the famous ornithologist Salim Ali. Now, many
towns and cities in India have bird-watching clubs, where groups of people set out in search
of birds.

3. One of the reasons why bird-watching is popular is because it is relatively an inexpensive


hobby. All one needs is a pair of binoculars, a book for identification and a notebook for
recording the time and place of sightings.

4. Many bird-watchers set up bird-feeds to attract birds. Often the observations compiled by
members of local bird-watching societies are very useful to scientists in studying the
population, habitat and migration patterns of variousspecies.

5. What is more, this hobby is becoming a favourite today,thanks to the internet, digital
photography and social media. There are even mobile applications (apps) where
bird-watchers add their observations and collect information. The awareness and
knowledge gained by bird-watchers is being passed on. This can go a long way in
protecting birds in an effective way.

classroom?

3)One batch of cookies contains 1 3/4 cups of melted chocolate. How many cups of melted chocolate

4)Ellen wanted to buy the following items: A DVD player for $49.95, a DVD holder for $19.95 and a
personal stereo for $21.95. Does Ellen have enough money to buy all three items if she has $90 with
her?

5)Mr. Ranjan purchased 15.500 kg rice, 25.750 kg flour and 3.250 kg sugar. Find the total weight of his
purchases. Is it 50 kg or less? If less, how much less?

6)Namita travels 20 km 50 m every day. Out of this, she travels 10 km 200 m by bus and the rest by
auto. How much distance does she travel by auto?

7)The product of two numbers is 2.0016. If one of them is 0.72, find the other number.

8)The weight of 34 bags of sugar is 3483.3 kg. If all bags weigh equally, find the weight of each bag.

9)Rick's car gets 29.7 miles per gallon on the highway. If his fuel tank holds 10.45 gallons, then how far
can he travel on one full tank of gas?

10)If x = 2, y = 3 and z = 5, find the value of;

(c) x – y + z

11)Think of a number, add 2 to it and then multiply the sum by 6, the result is 42.

12)Anshika’s Score in Science is 15 more than the two-third of her score in Sanskrit. If she scores x
marks in Sanskrit, find her score in Science.

13)A rectangular box has height h cm. Its length is 5 times the height and breadth is 10 cm less than
the length. Express the length and the breadth of the box in terms of the height.
