Life first appeared around 3.8 billion years ago and photosynthesis began between 3.5-2.5 billion years ago, producing oxygen and removing greenhouse gases which caused the Earth to go through alternating periods of extreme cooling and warming. Around 3 million years ago the Earth entered its current cycle of glacial and interglacial periods.
