Week 4 Tutorial
1. A circular room has a diameter of 10 m and a side-wall height of 5 m. The ceiling is a uniform diffuser of
luminance 100 cd/m2.
a. Please calculate the direct horizontal illuminance at the center of the room using the unit hemisphere
method.

b. Calculate the average illuminance on the floor, given the ceiling produces 100 cd/m2 luminance and a
reflectance of 0, the wall has a uniform diffuse reflectance of 0.5, and the floor has a reflectance of 0.3.
2. A temporary outdoor sales area is covered with fabric that is a perfectly diffusing transmitter. The area is circular
with a diameter of 25 m entirely covered by the fabric which has the same diameter. The fabric is flat and is 5 m
above the ground. The transmittance of the fabric is 0.4. Assume daylight produces 20,000 lux on the fabric.
a. What is the exitance of the bottom of the fabric due to transmitted daylight?

b. Calculate the direct horizontal illuminance at the center of the area.

c. If the sales area is completely open on the sides and the floor has low reflectance, do you think the reflected
light is important? Why?
