Q.1) For the bone AB the average normal stress in the bone at point C is
3.8 MPa when the bone is subjected to two 1200 N forces as shown.
Assuming the cross section of the bone at C to be annular and knowing
that its outer diameter is 25 mm, determine the inner diameter of the
bone’s cross section at C.

Solution

Geometry: = ( − )

4 4
= − = −

4 × 1200
= (25 × 10 ) − = 222.9 × 10
(3.8 × 10 )

= 14.93 × 10

= 14.93

Q.2) When the force P reached 8 kN, the

wooden specimen shown failed in shear along
the surface indicated by the dashed line.
Determine the average shearing stress along
that surface at the time of failure.

Solution

Area being sheared

A = 90 mm × 15 mm = 1350 mm2 = 1350 × 10-6 m2

Force P = 8 ×103 N

Shearing stress

τ= = ×
= 5.93 × 103 Pa = 5.93 MPa

Q3) The coupling shown in Fig. is

constructed from steel of rectangular cross-
section and is designed to transmit a tensile
force of 50 kN. If the bolt is of 15 mm
diameter calculate:
(a) the shear stress in the bolt;
(b) the direct stress in the plate;
(c) the direct stress in the forked end of the
coupling.

Solution

(a) The bolt is subjected to double shear, tending to shear it as shown in Fig.
There is thus twice the area of the bolt resisting the shear.

(b) The plate will be subjected to a direct tensile stress given by

(c) The force in the coupling is shared by the forked end pieces, each being subjected
to a direct stress

450 MPa ultimate strength in tension. What should be its
width w if the structure shown is being designed to
support a 20 kN load P with a factor of safety of 3?

Q5) Determine the stress in each section

of the bar shown in Fig.1 when subjected
to an axial tensile load of 20 kN. The
central section is 30 mm square cross-
section; the other portions are of circular
section, their diameters being indicated.
What will be the total extension of the
bar? For the bar material E = 210 GN/m2.

Solution

Stress = =
