Vocabulary

2 Match the words in bold with the definitions.

1. You can see what’s going on inside the boiler through the sight glass.
2. After weekly check-up rotary pumps restore their work.
3. The 3d engineer had to adjust the pressure in the FWG to ensure its proper work.
4. An ejector was used to accelerate the pressure in the pipeline.
5. An orifice inside the pipe creates difference in pressure and allows doing some
measurements.

1. Alter or move (something) slightly in order to achieve the desired

fit, appearance, or result.
A jet pump for withdrawing a gas, fluid, or powdery substance
Return (someone or something) to a former condition, place, or
position
An opening (such as a vent or a hole) through which something
may pass
A transparent tube or window through which the level of liquid in
a reservoir or supply line can be checked visually.

3 Fill in the gaps form 2

1. The nozzle of the ____________ is clogged, that’s why the flow pressure has dropped.
2. The piping system has several _____________ valves and you have to check them all.
3. A smaller upstream _________ prevents sufficient liquid flow to achieve higher pressure.
4. A ______________ or water gauge is a type of level sensor, a transparent tube through
which the operator of a tank or boiler can observe the level of liquid.
5. After a week of hard work engine crew ____________ the main engine to normal
operation.

4 Discuss the questions

1. What troubles can a fresh water generator have?

2. What parts of the FWG are the most vulnerable?

5 Read the text and comment on the numbers

0.05 MPa___________________________________________________________
0.08 MPa___________________________________________________________
50_________________________________________________________________
Low Rate of Distillate Generation
The heating tubes or the condenser piping are dirty inside and need cleaning.
Hot water temperature and/or flow rate is low and needs to be increased by the operator.
Dropping of Evaporation Temperature
The temperature or flow rate of hot water is low and needs to be increased to the specified level
The vacuum in the evaporator dropped
There is an air leak in the system which should be repaired and then tested at 0.05 MPa to make
sure regular operation has been restored.
Malfunctioning of Water Ejector
The nozzle of the ejector has closed partially or fully and needs to be cleaned
The diffuser is worn out and must be replaced.
The nozzle is worn out and must be replaced.
The pressure at the outlet of the ejector is at 0.08 MPa or higher.
The ejector outlet piping may be clogged and needs to be checked and corrected. The valve
opening of the overboard discharge valve needs to be checked and repaired.
The pressure at the outlet of the ejector is negative; the overboard discharge valve should be
closed up to a certain degree.
The distillate is present in the Sight Glass
This may indicate failure of the Distillate pump. It should be repaired.
The outlet valve of the Distillate pump is in the closed position and must be opened.
The outlet piping is clogged and must be cleaned
The pump is drawing in air, and the mechanical seal needs to be replaced.
High Salinity of the Distillate
The rate of generation of the distillate is too high and needs to be decreased by lowering the hot
water flow rate.
The temperature of evaporation is low (50 degrees or such). The vacuum adjusts valve needs to
be closed to the position when evaporating temperature increases.
The FWG uses dirty feed water and needs to be stopped.
The reading of the salinity indicator is faulty and must be tested.
The piping of the condenser is damaged and needs to be plugged inappropriately.
Low Feed Water Rate
The opening of the feed water adjusts valve is not sufficient and needs to be adjusted.
The feed water orifice may be clogged, and its surface needs to be cleaned.
High Feed Water Rate
The feed water adjusts valve has a very large opening and needs to be closed sufficiently.
The feed water orifice has been worn and needs to be replaced.

6 Match the trouble with the solution

1 Feed water orifice is clogged A Pressure at the outlet is wrong

2 Distilled water is too salty B Increase water temperature or flow to
specified level
3 Generation of the fresh water is too low C Repair an air leak in the system
4 Water ejector doesn’t work properly D Clean the orifice surface
5 Vacuum inside the drum drops E Adjust the opening of feed water valve
6 Evaporation temperature drops F Reduce the opening of feed water valve
7 Feed water rate is low G Increase hot water temperature and flow
rate
8 Feed water rate is high H Feed water is too dirty

7 Answer the questions

1. What parts of FWG can be clogged? What a ship engineer should do in this case?
2. What parts of FWG can be worn out? What should be done with worn parts?
3. What trouble can be caused with insufficient quality of feed water? What should
be done in this case? Why?
4. What does the distillate on the sight glass indicate? How to fix this trouble?
5. How to regulate feed water rate? Why is it necessary?
6. What malfunctions can be caused with wrong pressure?

Speaking

8 In groups, comment on real life situations. Define causes and measures to be taken.

Group A. Fresh water generator doesn’t produce the amount of fresh water stated by the
manufacturer.

Group B. Water injector doesn’t work properly, its working parameters differ greatly from the
ones stated in the manual.

Group C. According to the salinometer indicator fresh water cannot be used for any domestic or
auxiliary needs as salt content is too high.

Group D. Sight glass is barely visible because of condensation.
