Problem Based Learning (PBL): Fall 2023

Subject: Thermodynamics Lab Total Marks: 200

Course Code: ME-234L Submission Date: 27-11-2023
Class: BEME-FALL-22 Time: 8:00 AM
Semester: III Section A & B
FM’s Name: Engr. Umair Munir & Engr. M Shahid

Important Instructions:
Make groups of 4-5 students and perform this task as a group.
The project report (Font size – 12 Times New Roman) needs to be submitted of at least15 pages.
This project is worth 20% of your lab weightage.
Problem Statement:
The automobile sector is undergoing a major technology transformation from non-renewable to
renewable energy resources as enshrined in the UN SDG 7 & 11. This has pushed the propulsion
technology envelop of IC engines to developing highly efficient engines with artificial intelligence. Many
common user vehicles these days use VVTi or CVTi technologies that offer very high propulsive
efficiency together with adaptive engine controls that reduce harmful emissions while simultaneously
improving the performance of the engine. This has all resulted in major changes in the overall
configuration of the propulsion units being installed on modern vehicles.

In view of the above evolving scenario, you are to investigate the configurational deviations / changes
that are now evident amongst Internal Combustion Engines produced in the past ten years available in
the Automobile Industry. Your discussion on configurational aspects must address the following aspects.

Analyze various aspects related to their standardization, performance evaluation, effect of change in
input parameters (rpm, fuel composition, number of cylinders) and output parameters (e.g., power,
torque, and efficiency)
Comparison between different Thermodynamic Cycles (e.g., the difference between P-V and T-S
curves of Otto and Diesel cycles)
Investigate the magnitude of the engine’s emissions vis the older versions of the same engine types.
