A Good Life and Staying Fit: Annotated Bibliography

This study helped me grapple with the concept of having a good life and how exercising or

physical activity plays a role in that. One of the quotes that stood out to me the most was,

“Exercising to achieve an improved state of well-being is different from exercising to achieve

weight loss.” The reason why this stood out to me was because not only does exercising affect

you physically, it also affects you mentally, which also contributes to how one goes about living

a good life. What I learned from this study is that college students exercise to have a positive

mindset to help with their academic pursuits and not only do young adults work out to help with

their health and wellness, but also to positively influence emotions. All of those things I learned

from this study are important because to me in order for someone to have or go about a good life,

one must focus on the positives to remove the negatives and a way someone can do that is

staying active.

Happiness and Physical Activity.” PLoS ONE, vol. 12, no. 1, Jan. 2017, pp. 1–13.

This article talks about why it is important to exercise and how exercising ties in with happiness,

which also contributes to living a good life. The article mentions that when we do not exercise,

we are more likely to have negative health effects and a higher mortality rate. The results of the

study in this article showed, “self-reported physical activity was positively related to happiness”.

What this meant to me was that when we are staying active, that can positively affect our

mindset to having a good life and how we should go about having one. Something else that I

learned from this article was that not only does poor health have individual costs, but there are

societal costs also. When we do not stay active, poor physical and psychological health is more

likely to occur. This article showed me that not only does exercising contribute to happiness, but

what we do determines our mindset and the way we feel in life.
