MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD

MATHEMATICAL LANGUAGE AND SYMBOLS • Functions- a function relates each element of a set with exactly one
element of another set (possibly the same set)
- Function should be paired with an element with another set
SETS
- One to one
- Collection of objects - Many to one
- The objects in a set are called its elements or members - One to many (not function)
- Elements in a set can be any types of objects including sets

3 SET NOTATIONS

• SEMANTIC FORM- description

• ROSTER FORM- list like form
• SET BUILDER FORM- shortened description where you use symbols

• Proper subset- less than the other set

• Subset- less than or equal to other subset

• BINARY OPERATIONS
MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD

- The output or answer is found in the same set (binary function)

- Subtraction is not part of binary operation
• TRUTH TABLE
- A mathematical table used to determine if a compound statement is
true or false
- In a truth table, each statement is typically represented by a letter
or variable like p, q also has its own corresponding column in the
truth table that lists all of the possible truth values.
- the symbol ^ is used for AND: A and B is notated A^B
- the symbol V is used for OR: A or B is notated A V B
- the symbol ~ is used for NOT: A is notated ~A

TABLE FOR NEGATION

• for connective OR, it will be true if there is one statement that is
true

• for conditional, it will be only true if the 2nd statement is true and if
both are false or both are true.

• for connective AND, it will only be true if both statements are true
