Acceptance Sampling Plans

Session 8
Introduction to Acceptance
Sampling
• To accept or reject a lot
• Based on Sampling
• Determine quality level of an incoming shipment
or at the end of production
• Ensure that the quality level is within the level that
has been pre-determined
• P=proportion defective
Acceptance Sampling
• Single-sampling plan
• Select a sample of size n from a lot of N
items
• Accept the lot if the no. of defectives d≤ c;
Reject the lot otherwise.
• Test for p=p0 vs. p ≠p0
Parameters of a sampling plan
• Operating Characteristic (OC) Curve
• Pr(Accepting the lot | p)
• Acceptable Quality level (AQL)
• Quality level (p) of the vendor which is
acceptable by the customer
• Producer’s risk = Rejecting the a good quality
product, viz. a product with AQL
Parameters of Sampling plans
• Lot tolerance proportion defective (LTPD)
– poorest level of quality (p) which the
customer is willing to accept viz. beyond
which the customer will not accept the lot
• Consumer’s risk – Accepting a bad quality
• Double sampling plan
• Sequential sampling plan
Single Sampling
Plan
• Sample Size =20
• r=4
• d: Defectives in sample
• If d<=r, accept the lot, else reject the lot
• Probability of Acceptance of the lot with a
specific quality level
• OC curve
• Calculated using Binomial Probability (see
excel sheet
Benefits of acceptance Sampling
Plans
• Less expensive
• Reduced damage, as less items are handled
• Fewer personnel are involved in inspection
