I- Part one: Reading

A) Comprehension. 10pts
Read the text then do the activities below.
The greenhouse effect is the natural process by which the atmosphere traps some of the
Sun's energy, warming the Earth enough to support life. Without the greenhouse
effect the mean temperature on Earth would be -18°C and there would be very little or no
life. So the greenhouse effect itself is important in order to keep our planet at a suitable
temperature for life. The problem is that our increased release of greenhouse gases, such as
carbon dioxide, is causing an increase in the greenhouse effect and leading to global
warming. The latter can have damaging consequences on our planet.
Specialists have shown that the ten hottest years since records began have been in the last
30 years. The mean increase in the last 100 years has been less than 1°C. This might seem
small, but it is enough to have devastating consequences on many species. That’s why many
scientists have raised the alarm and called for reducing the emissions of carbon dioxide.
They believe that global warming is very serious, and predict the extinction of various
animal and plant species if we don’t reduce greenhouse gases emissions.
