The indicator diabetes prevalence1 shows the percentage of people ages 20-79 that have type
1 or type 2 diabetes. As seen in table 1 and graph 1 this data for Malaysia is only available
for the year 2011 when 12,1% of the population was affected by this disease. If we consider
the development relevance2 of this indicator it is noticeable that monitoring of this data is of
crucial importance for every country. People who suffer from either type of diabetes are
considered to be high risk patients, which has shown to be quite important during the corona
virus pandemic. Since the type 2 diabetes indicates the quality of life and nourishment in a
country, it would be useful to track the frequency of this disease separately from type 1
diabetes. It is a disease that cannot be cured, which means, the cost of its treatment is a long-

Development Relevance: Diabetes, an important cause of ill health and a risk factor for other diseases in
developed countries, is spreading rapidly in developing countries. Highest among the elderly, prevalence rates
are rising among younger and productive populations in developing countries. Economic development has led
to the spread of Western lifestyles and diet to developing countries, resulting in a substantial increase in
diabetes. Without effective prevention and control programs, diabetes will likely continue to increase.
