ELOCUTION – RULES & GUIDELINES

1. The goal of the Elocution competition is to encourage the skills and talents related to the art of
speaking in public.

2. The topic will be informed to the participant on June 24th, the Thursday before the Finale.

Participants will be given four topics from which they can anchor their talk. They are free to
choose which they feel best.

3. The speech may not exceed 5 minutes in duration. The time limit will be strictly enforced. A 30
second warning will be given.

4. The speaker is expected to memorize their speech, and is not allowed to read any part of the
speech from papers, notes, or cards. Use of placard is allowed.

5. Points will be awarded based on the following criteria:

i. Content (5)

ii. Expression (5)

iii. Diction (5)

iv. Voice Modulation (5)

v. Originality (5)

Total Score 25

6. The decision of the judges will be final.
