ABSTRACT

Each generation grew up in a completely different trend, timeline, and

experience. Due to this, each generation developed different sets of thinking,

judgment, and knowledge. Keeping this in mind, the researchers focused on how each

generation interacts with ICT to further investigate this concept. Our study,

Technology Alteration Through Generation: Investigating the Different Effects of

Advancement In ICT Across Generation At Calamba City Science Integrated School

S.Y. 2022-2023, aims to investigate how ICT advancement affects each generation.

Our study is focused mainly on the common users of ICT: Homeland

generation, Millennials, and Generation X. To gather data, 2 participants were chosen

for each generation. A google form link containing five questions was used to gather

the participants’ insights, opinions, and ideas. Through the questionnaire, the

researchers were able to gather and analyze responses revolving around the following

ideas: the effect of ICT on the judgment and perspective of the generations, the

problems that can occur due to the generational gap in ICT, which generation is

mostly affected by ICT advancement, and the pros and cons of ICT development.
CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL iii
iii

After gathering, interpreting, and analyzing the data, several conclusions were

made: most individuals from Homeland to Gen X generations have their judgment

and perspective changed due to ICT, the generational gaps in ICT produce different

levels of knowledge on ICT for each generation and such differences can create a

conflict between generations, older generations (some Generation Xs and some

Millennials) struggle with ICT advancement the most while the younger generations

(Homeland and some Millennials) struggle with ICT the least, and ICT advancement

is highly advantageous.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

This study focuses on the effects of advancement in Information and

Communication Technologies (ICT) across generations. This includes the generation

of the Generation X, Millennial (Gen Y), and Generation Z. The advancement of ICT

over the past few years can benefit people from different generations. However it has

negative effects especially for those who are more exposed to ICT. According to the

study entitled Information Technology: Contemporary Technology Issues, there are

several problems about Cybercrime (cyberbullying, cyberterrorism, computer virus,

hacking, and identity theft), Piracy and Copyright, Privacy and Data Security,

Information Access, and Social Issues (Internet Addiction and Knowledge Gap

Theory).

There are several studies about the issues in ICT but little to none are about

the effect of advancement of ICT in different generations. This study aims to

investigate this topic to give new insights and suggestions that can help ICT to

improve and overcome the generational gap problems in the modern world.

Background of the Study

The effects of advancement in Information and Communication Technologies

(ICT) across generations. This includes the generation of the Generation X,

Millennial (Gen Y), and Generation Z. Gen X had television back then and were

influenced by portable music (such as CDs and cassettes), Millennials were

influenced by the rise of the Internet, and Generation Z—the most recent generation

—was influenced by social media. The fast advancement of technology shows that

there is a gap between different generations in using ICT. (Wardynski, 2020)

The Information and Communication Technologies, which is also known as

ICT is defined as a technological resource and tools that are utilized to transmit, store,

create, share, or exchange information that is referred to as information and

communication. The Internet (websites, blogs, and emails), live broadcasting

technologies (such as radio, television, and webcasting), recorded broadcasting

technologies (such as podcasting, audio and video players, and storage devices), and

telephony (such as fixed or mobile, satellite, visio/video-conferencing, etc.) are

examples of these technological tools and resources. (UNESCO, 2009)

Millennials and Generation Z are more exposed to ICT that’s why they are

considered as Digital Natives. Millennials grew up in a time when information and

CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 3
3

communication technology (ICT) was rapidly evolving and widely used in a variety

of everyday activities. The internet, personal mobile ICT devices, and online SNS are

seen as beneficial inventions for society by Millennials, who lead the adoption of new

ICT devices and services such as smartphones, tablets, and online Social Network

Services, or SNS. (Yongsung Lee, 2019) While in Generation Z, technology has

become a part of their lives, especially students. Based on an online survey conducted

in Yogyakarta State University, 142 students in their first and third years were

familiar with utilizing ICT to support their learning activities, including the use of

social media, web browsers, online communication platforms, and instructional

videos (Ali Muhtadi, 2021). Research also shows that the average 8- to 10-year-old

consumes a variety of media for almost 8 hours per day, while older children and

adolescents consume media for approximately 11 hours per day (Impact of

technology on kids today (and tomorrow)., 2019).

On the other hand, Generation X are known as Non-Digital Natives due to

their lack of experience in the advancement of ICT. The oldest generation are on the

stability, simplicity, and security side, that’s why they are a little less willing to use

newer technologies. Back then, the world was transitioning toward a digital-first

society. They are the first generation to adopt the Walkman, a little tape player with
CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL

light earphones which individuals haul around so they can pay attention to music.

Also, the generation x communicated via email and phone calls. (Karr, 2023)

Theoretical Framework

Figure 1. Theoretical Framework

In relation to the study’s variable generation, the researchers anchored the

study on the Strauss-Howe Generational Theory by William Strauss and Neil Howe.

As stated on the framework, the Strauss-Howe Generational Theory states that there

is a cycle of a recurring pattern within generations. Aside from that, the theory also

identified different generations and described their characteristics. For the study’s

variable ICT, the researchers anchored the study on the Constructionist theory of

learning of Emeritus Seymour Papert.

CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 5

As stated on the framework, “The theory proposed that computer

programming and debugging can provide children a way to think about their own

thinking and learn about their own learning.” (MIT, 2016)

Conceptual Framework

Figure 2. Conceptual Framework

As further shown in the preceding paradigm, the INPUT box contains the

variables of the study. The INPUT box also contains the aim of the study which is to

analyze technology alteration through the generation and investigate the different

effects of ICT advancement across generations. On the other hand, the

THROUGHPUT box contains the processes that will be applied in the study. This

includes the process in how the data will be acquired and the process of analyzing and

interpreting the data acquired.

And finally, for the OUTPUT box, the researchers included the study outcomes which

are the response from the participants that will be analyzed.

Statement of the Problem

This study was conducted to analyze technology alteration through the

generation and investigate the different effects of ICT advancement across

generations.

1. How does ICT affect the judgment and perspective of individuals from the

Homeland to Gen X generations?

2. What are the problems that can occur because of the generational gap in ICT?

3. Based on the findings, what particular generation is affected by the imminent

advancement in ICT across generations?

4. What are the pros and cons of ICT development through generations?

Significance of the Study

Nowadays people are surrounded with plenty of information because of

technological advancement. ICT modified the process of acquiring information it is

now more convenient and easier to access. This study aims to determine the distinct

effects of ICT in different generations due to the generational gap. The researchers
CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 7

believe that the result of this research would provide exceedingly assistance to the

following:

Non-Digital Natives

Individuals who are part of Gen X are not familiar with ICT since they are

raised in an environment where the main source of information is dissimilar.

Technology advancement altered the process of gathering information, Gen X seems

to experience difficulties to keep up with the pace of advancement due to the changes

that come with it. The researchers anticipate that this study will come up with new

insights to overcome their problem.

Digital Natives

Millennial – Homeland generation is part of digital natives, however, most of

them are prone to be a victim of disinformation, especially millennials. They don’t

know how to check if the source of information is credible and because of that

millennials are easily influenced by what they see on the internet. Given how fast the

progress of ICT is now in the 21st period the outcome of the study will also help the

Homeland or younger generation to recognize the problems of the older generation.

The result of this study will possibly improve their skills in obtaining reliable

information and develop their understanding of ICT.

DICT

The Department of Information and Communications Technology is “An

innovative, safe and happy nation that thrives through and is enabled by Information

and Communications Technology.” The findings of the study would possibly provide

new intel and assist the DICT vision to help Filipinos in using technology. The

outcome will be beneficial for a strategy that involves planning and implementing a

policy that promotes the ICT development agenda.

Future researchers

The findings of this study will be beneficial to future researchers. It can

provide new ideas, and knowledge, as well as suggestions that can contribute to the

researchers. In addition, this may unlock new insights to examine and evaluate the

continuation of the study.

Scope and Limitations

The purpose of this research aims to determine the impact of advancement in

ICT across generations. This will help the population to be aware of the effects and to

know the perspectives of the Non-Digital Natives and Digital Natives in the

advancement of ICT. Also, it will give knowledge to younger generations to offer

guidance to Generation X who can’t keep up with the new technology. This research

only limits the impacts on the people who live in the Philippines using articles and

trusted studies as sources.

The researchers made a survey regarding the opinions of the chosen

participants in the advancement of ICT. Chosen people from the generation of

Generation X, Millennial, and Homeland can participate in this survey. It is

conducted online to ensure the safety of all.

REVIEW OF RELATED
LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

ICT

As stated by Koushik Das (2019) in The Role and Impact of ICT in Improving

the Quality of Education: An Overview, “ICT stands for Information and

Communication Technologies and are define, for the purpose of this primer, as a

‘diverse set technological tools and resources used to communicate, and to create,

disseminate, store, and manage information.’”

Additionally, Brown (2020) stated in the article The Importance of

Information and Communication Technology (ICT), that “ICT permeates all aspects

of life, providing newer, better, and quicker ways for people to interact, network, seek

help, gain access to information, and learn.”

Homeland Generation

One of the earliest theories entitled The Strauss–Howe generational theory

(1991) coined the term “Homeland Generation”. The “Homeland Generation" was

defined to be the generation of people born in 2005 up to recent. But even with the
CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1
21

established term, different terms and conditions are used in recent times to define the

Homeland Generation.

Mulroy (2023) uses the term “Generation Z” and states that “Gen Z spans

from 1997 to 2012, meaning anyone born within those years belongs to this

generation.”

Mckinsey (2023) on the other hand, also uses the term “Generation Z” but

states that “Generation Z comprises people born between 1996 and 2010.” Mckinsey

also added that Gen Zs can also be called “digital natives”.

Millennial Generation

Similar to “Homeland Generation”, this term was also coined by The Strauss–

Howe generational theory (1991). This generation was defined to be those born

between 1982–2004. The term “Millennial" is still used in recent times however, the

age range of the generation is varied.

According to Schumer (2020), “anyone born between 1982 and 2000, which

is now 83.1 million people or more than a quarter of the U.S. population, are

considered Millennials by the U.S. Census Bureau.”

On the other hand, according to Beresford research (2022), millennials are

those born in 1981 – 1996. Beresford research states that those people ages 27 – 42

are to be called “Millenials”.

Generation X

“Generation X” was also coined by The Strauss–Howe generational theory

(1991). In the theory’s definition, people born between 1961-1981 are considered to

be belonging in the Generation X. Similar to the term “Millenial”, this term is still

used up to recent times. But just like the other generations,Generation X also has

many different ranges.

According to McKenna, Generation X can also be called “baby bust

generation” , or “MTV Generation”. McKenna states that this generation is composed

of people born between 1965 and 1980.

On the other hand, according to Dorsey (2019), Generation X, comprising

approximately 50 Million individuals, is composed of people born between 1965–

1976.

Culture

In the development of technology, a lot of apps are invented to make our life

more convenient. The study entitled, ICT and the Sustainability of World Heritage

Sites. Analysis of Senior Citizens’ Use of Tourism Apps investigates the importance

of ICT to senior citizens as a tourist . It was discovered that the ICT app for tourism is

really helpful for senior citizens and has a positive impact on tourist perception and

experience (Ramos-Soler & al, 2019). After the researcher analyzed these mobile

apps, it shows the relevancy of these apps for cultural tourism and sustainability for

WCHS, which are essential for senior citizens (Ramos-Soler & al, 2019).

A quantitative study in Indonesia studying the Integration of ICT in

Generation Z's learning culture investigated Generation Zs and how they utilize ICT

in learning. In this study, a questionnaire was used to collect data. The results showed

that ICT does influence GenZs. It was also discovered that the generation preferred

studying using technology instead of the traditional way with printed materials.

Adding to that, it was discovered that more than 85% of the students in the study have

the skills and devices needed to use ICT for education. (Muhtadi et al., 2021)

Social

The older generation experienced difficulties in keeping up with the

development of ICT. In accordance with the study, The use of ICT in older adults

strengthens their social network and reduces social isolation: Literature Review and

Research Agenda ICT is a medium that enables connection between friends and

family in social networks . It was found out the quality of life of older adults is

affected by ICT and has an impact on their health literacy (Nedeljko & al, 2021).
CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1
61

Poor digital literacy creates a problem that older adults face because of their lack of

knowledge in ICT (Nedeljko & al, 2021).

Age Gap

Digital natives are more tech-savvy than digital immigrants, and ICT has a

diverse effect on different individuals (Jarrahi Mohammad Hossein, Hossein, &

Eshraghi , 2019). According to the study, Digital native’s vs digital immigrants A

multidimensional view on interaction with social technologies in organizations digital

natives are more fond of using social technologies for socializing and networking

than digital immigrants who preferred face to face interaction . The research explores

generational differences and other factors in ICT. It was revealed in this study that the

generational gap due to ICT is a significant basis to determine the use of social media,

individual factors, and work-related dynamics (Jarrahi Mohammad Hossein, Hossein,

& Eshraghi , 2019).

The prominent source of health information is the internet. During this

time the youth seems to be more experts than adults in using technology or ICT. As

claimed by the entitled study Generation Gaps in Digital Health Literacy and Their

Impact on Health Information Seeking Behavior and Health Empowerment in

Hungary consists of 522 participants the researchers found out that there’s a major

difference in their eHealth literacy and the older generation has the lowest eHeals
CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

scores but highest in self-empowerment compared to the younger generation (Papp-

Zipernovszky & al., 2018).

Participants who use the internet frequently as they seek an answer to their

health-related concerns have worse health status, and the individuals with higher

eHeals scores have subjective reports of better health status. The researchers

determine the difference in using healthcare services between the boomer and

younger generation (Papp-Zipernovszky & al., 2018). The younger generation has an

advantage due to their high eHeals score compared to Baby Boomers.

The internet is used by people for a wide range of social and economic

purposes, including entertainment, shopping, starting or managing a business, and so

on. Life is becoming increasingly digitized by digital technology, or the "internet of

things," not only on a personal level through smart devices like televisions, cars, and

homes, but also in many other socioeconomic fields like medicine and health care.

However, there are a number of levels of digital gap, and internet use is not evenly

distributed within and between nations. Access to digital media and an internet

connection constitute the first gap, while actual internet use constitutes the second

gap.

Van Deursen and van Dijk contend that chances to associate with the web and

the variety of gadgets are still inconsistent and disseminated by assets and social

classifications and, further, recommend what is going on guarantees the duration of

existing imbalances in web abilities, uses, and results. Another thread of research

suggests that outcomes vary depending on the internet-connected digital device;

Email seems to work better on computers and laptops, online gaming works best on

powerful computers and laptops, and shopping and banking work best on

smartphones.

Acceptance

The study entitled, Tell me your age and I tell you what you trust: the

moderating effect of Generations stated that because of social commerce sharing and

exchanging information, experiences, advice, and opinions are conceivable. The

information given by users is more credible than the information shared by company

commerce (user-generated vs. company generated); however, there is a significant

difference in how people would interact with technology based on age and

generational cohorts that show different behaviors, attitude, and interest in shopping

(Herrando & al, 2019). Generational cohorts have been divided to convey the

development of similar attitudes and beliefs among people (Meriac et al., 2010).

Generation Z depends on social commerce because they trust profoundly in user

generation, whereas Generation X relies upon trust in both user-generated and

company-generated information; Generation Y trusts based on the information

generated by a company more than Generation X (Herrando & al, 2019).

The environment nowadays is full of information due to the existence of ICT,

and for that particular reason, it is required that the people have access to information

and communication in an ethical and suitable way (Guner & Acarturk, 2018).

According to the WHO, ICT needs an investigation because of the potential problems

that elderly citizens may encounter with ICT interaction and interfaces. This study is

centered on the use and acceptance of ICT by senior citizens in light of the

technology advance model (TAM), along with a comparison to younger citizens. For

senior citizens, being in touch with friends, family, following news, and learning

about the latest innovations using social media accounts are the motives for using ICT

in everyday life, whereas younger adults use ICT for occupational purposes, such as

sending emails, etc. (Guner & Acarturk, 2018). The most common complaint of

senior citizens who use smartphones is that they are not able to use ICT due to a lack

of assistance, learning difficulties, and other factors such as aging and financial cost.

(Guner & Acarturk, 2018). The result of the study is that both senior citizens and

younger adults have the same level of acceptance for the technology acceptance

model, or TAM (Guner & Acarturk, 2018).

Synthesis of Related Literature and Studies

CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 2
02

After scrutinizing the aforementioned studies and literature, the researchers

determined the role and benefits of ICT in people’s lives, especially the different

generations affected by it. It shows that ICT is a technological tool that is present in

every facet of life, making it easier and faster for people to communicate, network,

get help, access information, and learn. There are 3 well known generations, which

are the Homeland Generation, Millennial Generation, and Generation X. It stated that

in Homeland, people born in 2005 up to recently belonged in this generation, based

on the earliest theories entitled The Strauss–Howe generational theory (1991). While

Mulroy (2023) and Mckinsey (2023) used the term Generation Z. They also believed

that Gen Z spans from 1997 to 2012 or between 1996 and 2010. In the Millennial

Generation, people who are born between 1982–2004 are included here. But

according to Schumer (2020), “anyone born between 1982 and 2000 are considered

as millennial. On the other hand, according to Beresford research (2022), millennials

are those born in 1981 – 1996 or the people with ages 27 – 42. Lastly, people born in

1961-1981 are considered as Generation X. McKenna asserts that Generation X can

also be referred to as the "MTV Generation" or the "baby bust generation." According

to McKenna, members of this generation were born between 1965 and 1980.

However, according to Dorsey (2019), Generation X is made up of people who were

born between 1965 and 1976.

CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 2
12

The studies stated that ICT became a part of our lives. This includes the social

and economic purposes such as entertainment, shopping, starting or running a

business, and many other socioeconomic fields like medicine and health care. As time

passes by, ICT becomes advanced which causes good and bad effects on everyone. It

shows that the younger generations are more experts to use ICT than the Baby

Boomers. They prefer using social technologies (smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc.)

instead of the traditional way with printed materials. Also, Digital Natives can adapt

easily to the fast advancement of ICT. However, Baby Boomers appear to be having

difficulties as a result of their old age, inability to receive assistance, difficulties with

learning, and financial cost. Additionally, their health and quality of life are

negatively impacted by low e-literacy. However, a variety of ICT applications,

including those related to tourism, are beneficial to WHS and improve seniors' travel

experiences. In addition, older immigrants are much more likely to work in person.

The main reason is that ICT has created a generational divide in how older and

younger generations use social media and technologies, which has an impact on their

jobs and themselves.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study is qualitative research and the design that the researchers will

utilize in elaborating the study at hand is a phenomenological design. Sasso (2020)

stated that, “Phenomenology helps us to understand the meaning of people's lived

experience.” Adding to that, Hassan (2022) defines Phenomenology as “a branch of

philosophy that is concerned with the study of subjective experience and

consciousness.” Hassan also stated that, “It is based on the idea that the essence of

things can only be understood through the way they appear to us in experience, rather

than by analyzing their objective properties or functions.” Furthermore, Deakin

University (2021) states that phenomenology answers questions involving

phenomena: “What is this experience like?”, “What does this experience mean?”, and

“How does this ‘lived experience’ present itself to the participant?”.

This design was used for it was perceived to be the most appropriate medium

for assessment applicable to the stated problem of the study. As stated by Deakin

University, this research design answers the question “How does this ‘lived

experience’ present itself to the participant?”. In this study, we will figure out how the
CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 2
42

perception of different generations are affected due to the varying experiences of the

different generations. More so, this method will guide the researcher to elicit answers

to the specific problems under study through a survey in order to gather the needed

data. This will be used to gather insights, opinions, stories, or any significant data that

can give the researchers evidence to base on to create a conclusion.

Locale of the Study/ Sampling Procedure

This study will be conducted at Calamba City Science Integrated School

which is well-known as a top school in Calamba. It is in Chipeco Avenue, Brgy. 3,

Calamba, Philippines. The school population consists of remarkable teachers and

senior high school students who passed the entrance exam, thus making it more

eligible to be the location of the study because the researchers will be able to collect

significant information, different ideas, and perceptible opinions from real experience

that they are currently facing right now in ICT.

The participants will be chosen through purposive sampling. It is a non-

probability sampling method that selects participants based on characteristics that the

study requires to get the data.

Participants of the Study

The individuals who will take part in this study are students and teachers of

Calamba Science Integrated School. A sampling size of (1) from Grade 10 students,

(1) from Grade 11 STEM students, (1) from Grade 12 STEM students, and (3)

teachers. These chosen participants are anticipated to answer survey questions

through Google Forms. The response will serve as the collected data and will be the

basis of the researchers in concluding the findings and results of the study.

Data Gathering Procedure

For the collection of data, the researchers will start the task by creating five

survey questions that will answer the questions under the statement of the problem.

The researchers will put the survey questions on google form to send it to the chosen

participants from Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z. After that, the

researchers will gather and analyze the data to learn about people's perspectives on

the development of ICT and to compare and contrast the responses of the participants.
CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 2

Data Analysis

The response from survey questions would serve as the collected data for the

researchers to investigate the different effects of ICT across generations. The

researchers will be focused on the personal experience of the participants during these

days in ICT; therefore, Narrative analysis will be used as a method to analyze the

given data.

The collected data from Gen Z, Millennials, and Generation X will be

organized to interpret the effects of ICT. Furthermore, the responses from the

participants will be thematically analyzed to achieve the goal of the study and have a

compare and contrast.

Research Instrument

In this study, the researchers will be using a survey in order to gather the

answers from the chosen participants from three generations (Generation X,

Millennial, and Generation Z). It is a free-answer type survey, commonly referred to

as "open-ended questions''. All of the questions are a free-answer type, that's why the

participants will state their own reasons, opinions, and experience/s to answer the five

questionnaires.

Validity and Reliability

The study being a qualitative research makes it hard to assess its validity and

reliability due to the data being naturally subjective. There is a lack of numbers and

the data being sought are mostly opinions and insights. However, Thakur and Chetty

(2020) gave 3 methods on how to ensure validity in a study: Employing moderator,

Triangulation, and Respondent validation. For reliability, Thakur and Chetty (2020)

also gave 3 methods: Refutational analysis; Use of comprehensive data, constant

testing and comparison of data, use of tables to record data; and Triangulation.

For the study’s validity, according to Thakur and Chetty (2020), the method

of Employing moderator is to “employ moderators to ensure that the data is genuine

and is not influenced by ‘what the researcher wants to see or hear’.” To practice this

method, the researchers will be using a digital survey to ensure that the researchers

would not be able to influence the data from the respondents. For Triangulation,

Thakur and Chetty stated that, “This basically involves that the research will be

conducted from different or multiple perspectives.” To practice this, the researchers

will be having more than 1 respondent for each generation. Data will be gathered

from 3 respondents each generation. And lastly, for Respondent Validation, Thakur

and Chetty stated that it is “testing the initial results with the participants in order to
CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 2
82

see if the results still ring true.” The researchers will not be able to practice this as this

study is limited to the locale and year this study will be conducted.

For the study’s reliability, according to Thakur and Chetty, Refutational

analysis “Involves exploring and explaining contradictions between individual

studies.” The researchers can practice this by evaluating the possible variables

contributing to the differences between the study and contradicting studies. After

evaluating the variables, the researchers will explicitly state the study’s variables to

set the limits of the study. The method Use of comprehensive data, constant testing

and comparison of data, use of tables to record data according to Thakur and Chetty

is the “Use of tools such as MS Excel and NVIVO for analysis.” This can be easily

practiced by the researchers by presenting the data that will be collected in an

organized manner. And lastly, Triangulation according to Thakur and Chetty, is “to

include a reference to a quantitative aspect”. This can be practiced by the researchers

by evaluating the amount of similarities and differences between the data collected.

These three participants prove the difference in their use of ICT according to their

priorities. Homeland Generation content depends mostly on their interests, while Gen

X uses ICT to connect with their families and for pragmatic purposes; on the other

hand, the Millennial Generation seems to be a combination of those two precedent

generations because they use ICT for serious matters and entertainment.

Perspectives affected by ICT.

ICT influences the piece of content that appear in devices of people around the world,

and it is highly possible that the contents which appears on their devices affect their

perspective. Most of the participants agreed that ICT changed their perspective.

However, in Gen X one of them disagreed while the other one said “YES, as a

teacher I strongly believed that I should NOT be left behind even if it's hard for me to

follow sometimes“.

The above-mentioned table 7 also shows that all participants agreed that, from their

perspective, ICT affects generations differently.

“Yes in terms of education and daily lifes”

There is a significant difference in how people would interact with technology based

on age and generational cohorts that show different behaviors, attitude, and interest in

shopping (Herrando & al, 2019).

Struggles in ICT

The environment nowadays is full of information due to the existence of ICT, and for

that reason, it is required that people have access to information and communication

in an ethical and suitable way (Guner & Acarturk, 2018). Surprisingly, the Homeland

Generation, who are considered digital tech savvy, is the one who is experiencing

difficulties using ICT. And in the Millennial Generation, one of them said no "If

you're referring to the usual ICT that I use, then, most of the time, no, while the other

one said “Yes. Although ICT has been a part of my everyday life, it somewhat

scrambles me bc it is constantly changing. There are always new updates and

whatnot, so you always gotta adjust and be flexible in the applications of ICT".

Furthermore, Gen X, who are older than precedent generations, do not experience

difficulties when using ICT.

Advancement of ICT.

The above-mentioned table 8 shows that the Homeland Generation tends to keep up

with the advancement of ICT. Participants in the Millennial Generation have different

opinions. The participant whose age is closer to Homeland Generation can keep pace

with the advancement, while the other one said, "Not really. I do not have access to

the products of advanced technologies. I do not intend to immerse myself in such

complex technology. I am somewhat selective of the tools that I can use for everyday

survival (like at work, home, and lifestyle"). Gen X is similar to the Millennial

Generation in that one of them can keep pace while the other doesn’t have an interest

in immersing itself more in ICT. Based on the statements of the participants, all

generations can keep pace with the rapid progress of technology if they want to.

(Guner & Acarturk, 2018) prove that both senior citizens and younger adults have the

same level of acceptance for the technology acceptance model, or TAM.

Interpretation of Data

The researchers created a survey in Google Forms containing five questions

about the effects of ICT advancement in different generations. The given generations

are Homeland, Millennial, and Generation X. The researchers picked two people each

from the three generations in Calamba City Science Integrated School to participate

in the survey. The ages in Homeland that responded to the survey are 16 and 17. They

have different contents that appear on their devices. The first respondent answered

“Taylor Swift related, News, Books, Music (Pop), Memes etc.”. It shows that the

content is interest dependent. While the second respondent’s content depends on the

applications that have downloaded on the device so it has a mixture of educational-

related stuff, gaming, music, entertainment, etc. Lastly, both of them agreed by saying

“yes” that a content changes their perspective, have struggles in using ICT, and if ICT

advancement affects generations differently. Next is the Millennial Generation, the

ages are 18 and 29. Both of them have different answers to each question. For the

third respondent, they have variations of contents like music, videos, and blog

posts. They face struggles in ICT because of new updates and whatnot, even though

ICT has been a part of their everyday lives. They also agreed that they can keep up

with the rapid advancement of technology, but the benefits that technology
CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 4

development has to offer counter the struggles they have experienced. While the

fourth respondent has contents that are interest-dependent.

They don’t have struggles in using ICT that they use most of the time. They also can

not keep up with the rapid advancement of ICT because they do not have access to

the products of advanced technologies and do not intend to immerse themselves in

such complex technology. Both of the participants in the Millennial Generation

agreed that a piece of content has changed their perspective, and if ICT advancement

affects generation differently. Lastly is the Generation X, the ages are 56 and 41.

Both of them have contents that use applications for education and everyday use. The

fifth respondent answered that the content has changed its perspective even if it’s

hard for them to follow sometimes. They do not have much struggles in using ICT

because they can adapt a little. The respondent can not keep up with the rapid

advancement of technology due to personal choice. Lastly, the respondent agreed that

ICT advancement affects generations differently because the late generation is more

appreciative of the current changes in technology while the old generation have their

own interests and sometimes they don't have the capacity to do searching and

exploring. While the last respondent answered “none” to a question that “a piece of

content ever changed your perspective?" and “do you have struggles in using ICT?”.

They can keep up with the rapid advancement of ICT in terms of academics. Lastly,

Chapter 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND

RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary of Findings

The primary objective of this research is to know the different effects of ICT

Advancement in each generation (Generation X, Millennial, and Homeland). The

researchers created a survey in Google Forms with five questionnaires in order to

answer the Statement of the Problem. There are a total of six participants, two people

each generation. It ranges in age from 16-56. The two participants in Homeland

Generation (Ages 16 and 17) have the same contents in their ICT which shows

education-related and their interest. Both of them use ICT in order to help with their

education, especially in schoolworks. They share the same thoughts regarding the

ICT Advancement if it affects the generations differently, changing its perspective

because of the contents, and if they have struggles in using ICT. While in the

Millennial Generation (Ages 18 and 29), the two participants have different opinions

regarding the questions. The third participant has problems regarding ICT

advancement even though it has been a part of their everyday life, but they can adapt

or be flexible to keep up with the advancement. While the fourth participant, does not

have an access to ICT that is advanced, and chose to not get involved with it. Lastly is

Generation X (Ages 41-56), both of the participants use ICT for their everyday lives
CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 4
84

and education. Also, they do not have struggles in using ICT because they can adapt a

little to the advancement of it for education and to not be left behind, and they agree

that ICT advancement affects generations differently. Although they have different

opinions on some of the questions. The sixth participant can not keep up with the

rapid advancement of ICT due to no interest, lack of assistance, and other personal

reasons. On the other hand, the seventh participant can keep up with the advancement

for education.

Conclusion

Evaluating the data gathered by taking into account the statement of the

problem, the following conclusions were drawn:

1.Most individuals from Homeland to Gen X generations have their judgment

and perspective changed due to ICT. From what we have gathered, each generation’s

perspective except one participant in Generation X is affected by ICT. And while ICT

does affect each generation’s perspective, it is also important to note that the

perspective and interests of the generations also affect the type of ICT they interact

with. This can be seen in how we’ve deduced in the preceding chapter that ICT

content is interest-dependent. This implies that while each generation can have their

judgment and perspective changed due to ICT, the manner of how this can occur may

vary from generation to generation.

CALAMBA CITY SCIENCE INTEGRATED SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 4
94

2. The generational gaps in ICT produce different levels of knowledge on ICT

for each generation and such differences can create a conflict between generations.

Since each generation has different levels of knowledge, when the generations

interact through ICT, it is possible that ICT becomes a barrier within the generations.

3. Based on the questionnaire, older generations (some Generation Xs and

some Millennials) struggle with ICT advancement the most while the younger

generations (Homeland and some Millennials) struggle with ICT the least. For the

younger generations, their interest in adapting to the advancements became the factor

that made them overcome their struggles in ICT advancement. Admittedly they

struggled, but they were able to adapt to the advancements. And as for the older

generations, their lack of interest in learning about the advancements became the

factor that precluded them from adapting to ICT advancement.

4. ICT advancement is highly advantageous. For the younger generations, the

advancement of ICT has been advantageous to them for school. And for the younger

generations, ICT development has no cons because they are able to adapt to the

advancements. And as for the older generations, the advancement’s pro is associated

with the individual’s job but there are no significant pros and cons; most individuals

have no interest in immersing themselves in ICT advancement. For the older

individuals, what they have is already sufficient so advancements have no effect on

them.

Recommendations

In the light of the foregoing findings and conclusions of the study, the

following recommendations are strongly presented:

1. Future researchers may conduct a similar study on a large group in order to

ascertain if the findings will remain the same.

2. A study about how people lose interest in ICT, which makes them unable to keep

pace with the development of ICT, must be conducted.

3. The school must allow students to use their cellphones inside the school because it

has been proven that students use ICT to learn efficiently and to do their academic

tasks.

4. The government should implement a program that aims to offer guidance in

utilizing ICT because even the younger generation, which is considered a digital

native, still struggles with using ICT.

5. Since different generations have dissimilar levels of knowledge in ICT. Future

researchers may conduct a study about how it affects communication between

younger and older generations.
