ASSIGNMENT: REDESIGNING A
SPACE IN THE HOME.

LECTURER IN CHARGE: DR. H.

AYOOLA
INTRODUCTION
The space to be designed is a bedroom in my home. The reason I chose this space is
because my family just moved into the house and it has not yet been completed and a
few spaces such as this has not yet been fully furnished, this gives me a great
opportunity to design a homey and beautiful design for this particular bedroom.

DESCRIPTION OF THE SPACE.

The room is 3600mm by 3000mm in area, with three openings, the openings are 1
door and 2. Windows presently the only furniture in the room is a bed.

Floor finish: The floor of the room has a rough cement plastering finish.

Wall Finish: The walls are made of hollow sandcrete blocks, finished with cement
and sand plastering, no painting or ornaments have been added to the wall.

Ceiling finish: The ceiling finish is made of asbestos slates of 1200mmx 1200mm no
lighting fixtures has been provided yet for the room.

PROPOSED INTERIOR DESIGN OF THE BEDROOM

The bedroom to be designed, after being closely examined the following
considerations has been taken.

PROPORTION. The arrangement of the furniture bring about a relative level of

proportion between the furniture, not one furniture being excessively larger or smaller
in terms of size relation to other furniture.

COLOUR. The dominant colour are shades of green, and it is softened by neutral
colours and the he light brown colour of the wooden furniture and floor tiles

TEXTURE. The Texture of the bedding fabrics with that of the curtains complements
the wall texture and the ceiling smooth texture complement the rough texture of the
tiles.

BALANCE. From the textures of the floor to the texture of the walls, ceiling,
furniture and furnishings with the blend of colours from dark green to neutral colours
gives the room a rich balanced appearance, stepping into the room gives the cozy
relaxing and embracing feeling of being connected to nature.
THE REDESIGN OF THE ROOM

THE FLOOR.
For the floor wood -like ceramic tiles that have a wood grain finish has been
recommended for the room, this is to complement the room’s cool nature look.

THE WALL.
The walls is recommended to first be treated with a coat or two of pop wall screeding,
this is to make the walls smooth and blend out the different plaster coloring on the
walls in preparation for painting.
The proposed colour combination for the wall is forest /dark olive green and a shade
of beige or grey, this combination of colors gives the room a feel of nature and helps
to relieve stress and tension, it also gives the emotions of joy and serenity . The type
of paint to be used is acrylic emulsion paint. The reason for Acrylics is that it is
relatively less toxic to human and animals, affordable, durable and give the room a
pleasing hue.

THE CEILING.
The asbestos ceiling slate is to be replaced with gypsum board false ceiling which is
light weight, fire resistant, Not expensive to purchase and install, and most
importantly don’t pose threat to health as opposed to asbestos ceiling with the
microscopic fiber particles causing Respiratory diseases and cancer when inhaled can
The ceiling will incorporate all the ceiling lighting fixtures and then finished with
white pop ceiling screeding. This gives the room an elegant look and make the room
seem higher.
