1) Improved Access to Market


SHOP VISITATION AND MANILA FAME MEETING WITH CITEM AND LA UNION MSMES (BAUANG
CROCHET ASSOCIATION, KULTUR SIAK, NORTHWAY ARTS & CRAFTS)
May 2-3, 2023
Bauang, San Fernando City, and San Juan, La Union

The Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of DTI, visited
the DTI Regional Office 1 and the Provincial Government of La Union as part of the Manila FAME 2023
Regional Roadshow series. The activity aimed to meet and invite MSMEs and stakeholders to be part of the
Manila FAME Trade Show happening on October 19-21, 2023 at the World Trade Center, Metro Manila.

La Union W&H MSMEs present during the activity were Mr. Felipe Garduque of Northway Arts and Crafts and
Mr. Ferdinand Hulog, representative of Bauang Crochet Association. –MP Gabriel

15th SME SUMMER TRADE FAIR


May 17-23, 2023
Annex Mall Activity Area, Robinsons Place, San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte

The Department of Trade and Industry – Ilocos Norte in collaboration with Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte
and Robinsons Place Ilocos launched its 15th SME Summer Trade Fair 2023. The event ran from May 17 to 23,
2023 at Robinsons Place Ilocos. Among the exhibitors are nine (9) belonging to the Wearables and Homestyle
Industry Cluster namely, Sudemari Hand Loomweaving Manufacturing, San Jose MPC, Istariray.ph, Hands at
Work, Jack's Place Variety Shop, Aracelie's Souvenirs, Del Mar MPC, Hand N Craft Creation Wood Works and
Blue Skies Furniture Center.

CRAFT DEMONSTRATION ON WOOD WORKS


May 22, 2023
Robinsons Place Ilocos, San Nicolas Ilocos Norte

The Wood Works Craft Demonstration was conducted on May 22, 2023, from 2:00PM to 5:00PM during the
15th SME Summer Trade Fair, Annex Mall Activity Area, Robinsons Place, San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte. Mr.
Nathan S. Ortega, owner of Hand Craft N’ Creation Wood Works served as the resource person during activity.

Ten (10) participants were also given free demonstration kits.

2) Database Development and Material Inventory


UPLB DATA COLLECTION AND INTERVIEW OF BAMBOO STAKEHOLDERS FOR VCA BAMBOO TEXTILE
FIBER PROCESSING PROJECT
May 24-26, 2023
Bangar, La Union

The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) - College of Forestry and Natural Resources in coordination
with DTI La Union, conducted a follow-up visit as part of the project on Value Chain Analysis of Bamboo Textile
Products the Philippines.

The group conducted data collection and in-depth key informant interview at Bamboo Fiber Textile Innovation
Hub, Casilagan, Naguilian, La Union, Center for Bamboo Development Inc. (CBDI), Brgy. Ambalite Pugo, La
Union and Loomweaving at Bangar, La Union on May 24-26, 2023. Four (4) loomweavers including De Castro's
Loom Weaving, Nogueras Loom Weaving, RP Lucina's Loom Weaving and Coloma's Loom Weaving were
interviewed as part of the market study on the potential of bamboo fiber as raw materials. – MP Gabriel

3) Capacity Building and Skills Development


KMME-MME BIP (PRESENTATION AND GRADUATION)
J&V Function Hall, City of San Fernando, La Union
May 18-19, 2023

Twelve (12) La Union entrepreneurs successfully completed the Kapatid Angat Lahat Program, Kapatid Mentor
ME - Money Market Encounter online coaching and mentoring program. After attending the sessions on
enterprise development modules, they were able to present their respective Business Improvement Plans. The
graduation ceremony was conducted at J&V Function Hall on May 19, 2023.

Out of the ten (10) KMME graduates, two (2) were manufacturers/traders of gifts, home decors, and furniture
and furnishings namely Mary Grace Estigoy of Gracias Memento Arts and Crafts Manufacturing and Ramil
Tayocnog of Susan Furniture Shop. – MP Gabriel

SKILLS UPGRADING PROGRAM ON GIFTS, DECORS, AND HOMESTYLE


Baldog, San Carlos City, Pangasinan
May 31-June 1, 2023

The Department of Trade and Industry Pangasinan conducted the 2-day Skills Upgrading Training on Gifts,
Decors and Housewares on May 31-June 1, 20213 at Brgy. Baldog, San Carlos City, Pangasinan. It was
participated in by fifteen (15) W&H MSMEs.

DOST SETUP FOR THE WEARABLES AND HOMESTYLE INDUSTRY
May 23, 2023
San Fernando City, La Union

DOST-1 awards Php 1,329,597.00 worth of assistance to three SETUP firms in La Union
The Department of Science and Technology Regional Office 1 through the Provincial Science and Technology
Office- La Union awarded Php 1,329,597.00 cheques to three firms in La Union under the Small Enterprises
Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) on May 23, 2023.

The three (3) firms that received the assistance are Hillside Salt Manufacturing (Php 519,500.00), Romar Wood
Crafts Manufacturing (Php 253,000.00), and Joe’s Furniture Manufacturing (Php 597,097.00) all of them were
from Naguilian, La Union.

Mr. Jonathan M. Viernes, Provincial Director of PSTO La Union, together with Engr. Bernadine P. Suniega. SRS
II and other PSTO La Union Staff handed cheques to the firms.

SETUP is one of the flagship programs of DOST to support and encourage MSMEs to implement technological
innovations that enhance their operations, that increase their productivity, and improve their competitiveness.

7) Institutional Strengthening of Collaboration and Linkages
COLLECTIVE MARK MEETING FOR THE ILOCOS WOVEN FABRIC
May 26, 2023
Via Zoom

The Regional Industry Development Division of the Department of Trade and Industry conducted an initial
meeting with the DOST, MMSU, UNP and concerned LGUs and beneficiaries for the Collective Mark
Registration of Abel Iloko Fabrics in the twelve (12) municipalities from the province of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur
and La Union. Engr. Jeanne Dangkeo, IPRS II and Engr. Halen Gamisera, IPFOS from IPOPHIL was also
invited to discuss the collective mark registration process and its benefits. A follow through meeting will be called
again to endorse the final beneficiaries of collective mark in consultation with the provincial and local
government units.
