1. The properties of a three-story shear building are given below. Derive a Rayleigh
damping matrix such that the damping ratio is 5% for the first and third modes.
Compute the damping ration for the second mode. Where m = 4.5 × 104 kg, k = 3.03 ×
107 N/m.

m 3k/9

m 7k/9

2. The undamped system shown below is subjected to an impulsive force at the first-floor
mass: 𝑝1 (𝑡) = 𝑝0 𝛿(𝑡). Derive equations for the lateral floor displacements as function
of time.

3. The shear frame shown below is subjected to harmonic force 𝑝(𝑡) = 𝑝0 sin 𝜔𝑡 at the
top floor. Determine the steady-state displacements using modal analysis. Determine
the story shears (considering steady-state response only) by two methods: (a) directly
from displacements (without introducing equivalent static forces), and (b) using static
forces. Show that the two methods give identical results.
