Chapter 8: Fractions and decimals

Fractions, decimals and recurring decimals

Fractions can be written as decimals

How to convert fractions into decimals:

Examples:
a) 1/2
b) 3/5
c) 5/20
d) 1/3

Recurring decimals: numbers with an infinite number of

decimal places

Terminating decimals: numbers where their decimal places

come to an end

Multiplying recurring decimals/ terminating decimals
A recurring decimal will still be recurring when multiplied with any
another number, A terminating decimal will still be terminating if
multiplied by a terminating number

How to know whether a decimal will recur or
terminate?
If the denominator in its simplest form is NOT a
multiples of 2 or 5. Then the number will be recurring.

Examples:
1) 3/20
2) 3/6
3) 1/10
4) 7/20
5) 5/55
6) 5/95

Adding, Subtracting, Dividing, Multiplying fractions
Adding:
1) Make sure the denominator of the fractions is the same
2) Add the numerator of the fractions like normal
If mixed fractions are present, split up the mix fractions
Change any improper fraction to mixed fractions

Subtraction:
1) Make sure the denominator of the fractions is the same
2) Subtract the numerator of the fractions like normal

Subtracting Mixed fractions

Prepared by YAP ZL ZL TEACHES (IGCSE ADD MATHS/ MATHS) 012-8698323

GENERAL GUIDELINES
1) Separate the mixed fraction into whole number and a fraction
2) Subtract the whole numbers; subtract the fractions

How to convert improper fraction to mix fractions (Refer below)

How to convert mix fractions into proper fractions

Multiplying fractions (Cutting method):
1) Divide any numerator and denominator with a specific number
2) Multiply the fractions like usual
If mixed fractions occur, convert mixed fraction into improper
fractions

Dividing fractions (Cutting method):

1) Flip the numerator and the denominator of the fraction after the
division sign (÷)
2) Divide any numerator and denominator with a specific number
3) Multiply the fractions like usual

If mixed fractions occur, convert mixed fraction into improper

fractions
