Tell whether each sequence is arithmetic or not.

1. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, …
This is an arithmetic sequence with a common difference of 2. In fact, the
arithmetic sequence is the set of odd numbers.
2. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, …
The common difference is 2. This is also an arithmetic sequence
representing the set of even numbers.
3. 3, 9, 16, 24, 33
The differences between two consecutive terms are not equal. This is not
an arithmetic sequence.

Finding a certain number of terms between two given terms of an arithmetic

sequence is a common task in studying arithmetic sequence.
The terms between any two non-consecutive terms of an arithmetic sequence are
known as arithmetic means.
The arithmetic mean between two real numbers x and y is the average of x and y
𝑥+𝑦
or .

2

In the sequence 3, 12, 21, 30, 39

12, 21, and 30 are called the arithmetic means of the given sequence.

Examples:

1. Insert 4 arithmetic means between 5 and 25.

Solution: since we are required to insert 4 terms, then there will be 6 terms in all.
Given: a1 = 5
an = 25
n=6
Find: d
Using the formula: an = a1 + (n-1) d
25 = 5 + (6-1) d
25 = 5 + 5d
25-5 = 5d
20 = 5d (Dividing both sides of the equation by 5)
4=d
Using now the value of d, we can now get the 4 arithmetic means, that is
1st term = 5
2nd term = 5+4 = 9
3rd term = 9+4 = 13
4th term = 13 + 4 = 17
5th term = 17 + 4 = 21
6th term = 21 + 4 = 25

Therefore, the 4 arithmetic means between 5 and 25 are 9, 13, 17, and 21.

2. Find the arithmetic mean between 27 and 5. Solution:

Arithmefic mean = = 16

At this point, you know already some essential things about arithmetic sequence.
Now, we will learn how to find the sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic
sequence.

SUMMING UP!
What is the sum of the terms of each finite sequence below?
1. 1, 4, 7, 10
1 + 4 + 7 + 10 = 22
2. 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
3 + 5 + 7 + 9 + 11 = 35
3. 10, 5, 0, -5, -10, -15
10 + 5 + 0 + (-5) + (-10) + (-15) = -15

Definition: An arithmetic series is the sum of the terms of an arithmetic

sequence. The sum of a finite arithmetic sequence is denoted by Sn = a1 + a2 + a3 + .
. . + an
4
Sum of a Finite Arithmetic Series
The sum of n terms of an arithmetic sequence is given by
𝑛
S n = ( a 1 + an ) if an is given 2
𝑛
Or Sn = [2 a1 + (n-1) d] if an is not given 2

Where: Sn = the partial sum

an = the nth term a1 = the
first term d = the common
difference
Examples:

1. Find the sum of the first 35 terms of the arithmetic sequence 1, 4, 7,

10, …
Solution:
Given: n = 35 , a1= 1 , d = 3
𝑛
Sn = [2 a1 + (n-1) d]
2

S35 = [2 (1) + (35-1)3]

S35 = [2 + (34)3]

S35 = [2 + 102]

S35 = [104)
= 1 820
Hence, the sum of the first 35 terms is 1 820.

2. If a school offers a monthly starting salary of ₱20 000 and an increase of

₱100 per month, what is the total amount of salaries for 3 years? Given:
a1 = 20 000 d = 100
n = 3 years = 36 months
Solution:
𝑛
Sn = [2 a1 + (n-1) d] 2

S36 = [2 (20 000 + (36-1) 100]

S36 = 18 [ 40 000 + (35)(100]

S36 = 18 [ 40 000 + 3 500]

S36 = 18 ( 43 500)
S36 = 783 000
Thus, the total amount of money that will be earned in 3 years in this school
is ₱783 000.

3. A pile of bricks has 30 bricks in the bottom row, 29 bricks in the
second row, and so on to 14 bricks in the top row. How many bricks
are in the pile?
Given:
a1 = 30 , an = 14
The total number of bricks in the pile is 30+29+…+14. Since there are 30
bricks in the bottom row and each succeeding row has one fewer brick until
the top row with 14 bricks, then there must be 30 – 14 + 1 = 15 rows.
Solution:
𝑛
Sn = ( a1 + an)
2

S15 = ( 30 + 14)

S15 =

S15 = 330

Hence, there are 330 bricks in the pile.

4. First 25 terms of the arithmetic sequence 4 , 9, 14, 19 , 24 , . . .
5. Multiples of 3 from 15 to 45

6
The terms between two given terms of an arithmetic sequence are called
arithmetic means.
One arithmetic mean between two terms is called the arithmetic mean or
𝑎+𝑏 average
of the two terms. The average of a and b is . 2

An arithmetic series is the sum of the terms of an arithmetic sequence. The sum
of a finite arithmetic sequence is denoted by Sn = a1 + a2 + a3 + . . . + an.
