Lesson 6.

Domain and Range of a

Function
Learning Competencies

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to do

the following:

● Determine dependent and independent variables

(M8AL-IIc-3).

● Find the domain and range of a function (M8AL-IId-1).

Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to

do the following:
∙ Accurately distinguish a dependent variable from an
independent variable.

∙ Correctly determine the possible values of x and y of a

given function.

∙ Correctly determine the domain and range of a function

Have you bought a drink in a vending machine? To order a drink
from a vending machine, you need to put in a certain amount so
that you can buy the drink that you prefer.
Of course, you can put in more money so that you can buy more
drinks. So, the amount that you have to pay in a vending
machine depends on the number of drinks that you intend to
buy. These things can be illustrated using functions.
The amount that you have to pay and the number of drink that
you have to buy plays an important role in representing the
situation above using a function. The concepts of domain and
range of a function are involved in this situation.

In this lesson, you will learn about the domain and range of a
function.
Essential Questions

● How will you distinguish a dependent variable from an

independent variable?

● How will you find the domain and range of a function?

Dependent and Independent Variables

An independent variable is a variable that is changed or
controlled while a dependent variable is a variable that
depends on the value of the independent variable.

Key Points

● An independent variable is a variable that is changed or

controlled while a dependent variable is a variable that
depends on the value of the independent variable.

● The domain is the set of all admissible values of 𝑥, and
