CLO 2 (3 marks)

Q1: Establish a relation for the average and maximum velocity for one dimensional viscous
flow of fluid between two fixed parallel plates.

Q2: Explain the essential features of Blasius method of solving boundary layer equation for a
𝑈 𝜓
flat plate. Using the similarity variable 𝜂 = 𝑢√𝜈𝑥 and stream function 𝑓(𝜂) = derive
√νx U
expressions for:

a) 𝑢
b) 𝑣
∂𝑢
c) ∂𝑥
∂𝑢
d) ∂y
𝜕2 𝑢
e) 𝜕𝑦 2
f) the final form of the simplified Navier-Stokes equation for the boundary layer over a
flat plate by substituting the above expressions,
g) the boundary layer thickness (δ).

Q3: If u = ao + a1 y + a2 y2, determine u(y), (x) and Cf(x) using the momentum integral method.
The boundary layer may be assumed to be laminar.

Ans: u  2 y  y 2 ,   5.51/2 , C f , x  0.73

Q4: Water flows past a flat plate with an upstream velocity of U=0.02 m/s. Determine the
water velocity a distance of 10 mm from the plate at distances of x=1.5 m and x=15m from the
leading edge.

Q5: Water flows past a triangular flat plate oriented parallel to the free stream as shown in Fig.
P9.48. Integrate the wall shear stress over the plate to determine the friction drag on one side
of the plate. Assume laminar boundary layer flow.

Q6: The paint stirrer shown in Fig. P9.83 consists of two circular disks attached to the end of
a thin rod that rotates at 80 rpm. The specific gravity of the paint is SG= 1.1 and its viscosity
is μ = 2 x 10-2. Estimate the power required to drive the mixer if the induced motion of the
liquid is neglected.
CLO 3 (2 marks)

Q7(a): Contrast the advantages and disadvantages of using pumps in parallel and in series.

Q7(b): The following details refer to a centrifugal water pump. Outer diameter: 30 cm, Eye
diameter: 15 cm, Blade angle at inlet: 30°, Blade angle at outlet: 25°, Speed: 1450 rpm. The
flow velocity remains constant. The tangential velocity at inlet is zero. If the hydraulic
efficiency is 82%, determine the head developed by the pump. If overall efficiency is 76% and
the blade width at outlet is 2 cm, determine the bhp. Ans: 16.55 m, 35.5 hp

Q8: A centrifugal pump having an impeller diameter of 1 m is to be constructed so that it will

supply a head rise of 200 m at a flowrate of water when operating at a speed of 1200 rpm. To
study the characteristics of this pump, a scale, geometrically similar model operated at the same
speed is to be tested in the laboratory. Determine the required model discharge and head rise.
Assume that both model and prototype operate with the same efficiency and therefore the same
flow coefficient.

Q9: A reaction turbine is designed to produce 24,000 hp at 120 rpm under 150 ft of head.
Laboratory facilities are available to provide 30 ft of head and to absorb 45 hp from the model
turbine. Assume comparable efficiencies for the model and prototype turbines. Determine the
appropriate model test speed, scale ratio, and volume flow rate. Ans: 371 rpm, Dm/DP = 0.145,
14.3 ft3/s

Q10: Water is delivered from a reservoir through a 1.2 m diameter pipe (f = 0.022), 3200 m
long, to a nozzle that emits a 200 mm diameter jet. The jet impinges on the buckets of an
impulse turbine, mean diameter 2.5 m, which runs at 375 rpm. The surface of the reservoir
providing the water is at an elevation 700 m higher than the nozzle. Assume that the head loss
through the nozzle can be expressed as 0.05 V12/2g, where V1 is the jet velocity. The relative
velocity of the jet decreases by 10% as the water traverses the buckets, which are so shaped
that they deflect the jet through 165. Find the flow velocity in the pipe, jet velocity, flow rate,
Wshaft, and turbine efficiency. Ans: 3.13 m, 111.94 m/s, 3.52 m3/s, 20.3 MW, 87.6%
