CLO 2 (3 marks)

Q1: Analyze the velocity distribution for a fully developed laminar flow in a pipe and

(a) prove that the velocity can be given by

(b) determine the radial distance from the pipe axis at which the velocity equals the average
velocity.

Q2: If the velocity profile and was shear stress can be represented by the following empirical
relationships: 1
u y 7
= 
U  
1
  4
 w,x = 0.0225  U 

analyze the flow and determine (x), *(x), (x) and Cf(x) using the momentum integral
method. The boundary layer may be assumed to be turbulent.

Q3: An approximation for the velocity profile in a laminar boundary is = 2 𝛿 − 2 (𝛿 ) +
𝑈
𝑦 4
(𝛿 ) . Analyze the expression to show that it satisfies the boundary conditions applicable to
laminar boundary velocity profile for a flat plate.

Q4: Water moves over one side of a flat plate. The free stream speed is 3 m/s. The plate is 0.5
m wide. Analyze the flow to specify the maximum length of the plate to ensure that only
laminar boundary layer exists. For this length, what are the plate drag coefficient and drag?
Also determine the water velocity 5 mm from the surface at the trailing edge of the plate. The
kinematic viscosity of water may be taken as 1.007 x 10-6 m2/s.

Q5: A belt moves upward at velocity V, dragging a film of viscous liquid of thickness h, as
shown in the figure. Near the belt, the film moves upward due to no-slip. At its outer edge, the
film moves downward due to gravity. Assume that the only nonzero velocity is v(x), with zero
shear stress at the outer film edge. Analyze the given system with the aid of Navier-Stokes
equations to develop expressions for the velocity distribution v(x) and the flow rate in the film.
2

All assumptions and conditions required to simplify the Navier-Stokes equations must be
stated.

Q6: Air flows past two equal sized spheres (one rough, one smooth) that are attached to the
arm of a balance as is indicated in Fig. When U= 0, the beam is balanced. Analyze the given
conditions to find the minimum air velocity for which the balance arm will rotate clockwise.

CLO 3 (2 marks)

Q7(a): A plot of pump net head as a function of pump volume flow rate, or capacity is shown
below. Sketch the figure and illustrate the following using labels: the shutoff head, the free
delivery, the pump performance curve, the system curve, and the operating point.
3

Q7(b): Prepare detailed explanations of available net positive suction head and required net
positive suction head and use them to explain how these two quantities are used to ensure that
cavitation does not occur in a pump.

Q8: Water at 20°C flows through a centrifugal pump at the rate of 4000 L/min. The impeller
has an inner radius of 50 mm, an outer radius of 100 mm, and a width of 75 mm, and it rotates
at 1800 rpm. The blades of the impeller have a blade angle of 30° at the inflow surface and a
blade angle of 20° at the outflow surface. Carry out detailed calculations to find: (a) the head
delivered to the fluid; (b) the difference in pressure between the outflow and inflow if head
losses were neglected and the inflow and outflow pipes were at the same elevation and of the
same diameter; and (c) the inflow blade angle that would cause the inflow velocity to be normal
to the inflow surface. (d) Under the normal inflow condition, what would be the difference in
pressure between the outflow and inflow if head losses were neglected?

Q9: A centrifugal pump having an impeller diameter of 1 m is to be constructed so that it will

supply a head rise of 200 m at a flowrate of water when operating at a speed of 1200 rpm. To
study the characteristics of this pump at model scale, a geometrically similar model operated
at the same speed is to be tested in the laboratory. Solve for the required model discharge and
head rise. Assume that both model and prototype operate with the same efficiency and therefore
the same flow coefficient.

Q10: In an inward flow reaction turbine, the supply head is 15 m, and the maximum discharge
is 0.35 m3/s. The outer diameter of the runner is twice the inner diameter, and the velocity of
flow is constant and equal to 0.15 (2ghT)1/2. The runner vanes are radial at inlet and the runner
rotates at 450 rpm. Use your knowledge of turbomachinery principles to determine (a) the guide
vane angle, (b) the vane angle at exit for radial discharge, and (c) widths of the runner at inlet
and exit. The vanes occupy 7% of the circumference and the hydraulic efficiency is 87%.
