Attempt ALL questions

Marks for each question are shown in brackets

1. Explain the following terms :

a. Relative Density (2)

b. Volume of Displacement (2)

c. Displacement (2)

d. Force of Buoyancy (2)

e. Waterplane Area (2)

f. Dock Water Allowance (2)

2. a. A vessel has the dimensions L 139.6m; LBP 137.5m; B 20.42m; D 11.70m

d 6.50m and Cw 0.77 (Constant); Cb 0.69 (Constant); ρsw 1.025t/m3;
RDDW 1.012.

Using the above information calculate the vessels displacement if she were
box shaped and in SW. (2)

b. Vessel ‘A’ has an initial draught of 8.68m. Using the hydrostatic tables
calculate:

i. the initial displacement in SW; (3)

ii. the displacement after discharging 13250t of cargo, and loading 3125t
of SW Ballast, 120t of bunkers and 50t of FW; (2)

iii. the final draught in FW. (3)

Calculate:

(a) her FWA; (5)

(b) the amount by which she may submerge her Winter Marks on (5)
completion of loading.

(c) the Cargo to load so that she will sail at her Winter Marks in SW. (20)
