PROJECT 2: DESIGN OF PRECAST CONCRETE INDUSTRIAL HALL

Scope of the project and data

Name and surname:

Group:

For individual specified data prepare:

▪ preliminary calculations and drawings: transverse section (scale 1:50) and plan view
(scale 1:100) of the precast concrete industrial hall,
▪ structural analysis and reinforcement calculations of column and foundation,
▪ working drawings of column and foundation (scale 1:10).

Longitudinal module: a = …
Number of modules: n = …
Distance between axes of lower parts of the column: L = …
The lift height of the crane: H = …
Crane lifting capacity: Q = …
Roofing system: …
Concrete: …
Location zone: …

Hall height and width should be adjusted to crane requirements, minimum distance between
crane and roof structure is 0.5 m.
Catalogs of precast concrete units of polish producers are available online.

The following data sheet should be attached to the project.

PRELIMINARY PROJECT

The scope of the preliminary project:

• selection of the roofing system and girder
• selection of the crane and runway beam
• selection of the preliminary dimensions of column and foundation
• selection of fittings and additional elements
• selection of the industrial concrete floor with dilatations
• preliminary drawings

1. ROOFING SYSTEM

Roofing system should be selected on the basis of individual data (concrete roof slabs without
purlins, high profile trapezoidal sheets without purlins, low profile trapezoidal sheets with
purlins or sandwich panels with purlins).

The type and dimensions of elements of a roofing system should be selected on the basis of
producers catalogues and calculations of loads acting on the roof.

For roof slabs/panels etc.:

For purlins (if applicable):

2. GIRDER

The type and dimensions of a precast girder should be selected on the basis of producers
catalogues and calculations of loads acting on the girder.

For roof system without purlins:

For roof system with purlins:

3. CRANE, RAIL AND RUNWAY BEAM

The type of a crane should be selected on the basis of producers catalogues, the L
dimension of the hall and the maximum loading Q.

Example data:

Examples of rails:

DIMENSIONS OF THE CRANE BEAM

HEIGHT: ℎ = 40 ÷ 100 𝑐𝑚, 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 10 𝑐𝑚
𝑙0
light crane 𝑄 ≤ 5𝑡: ℎ = 10÷15
𝑙
medium crane 5t < 𝑄 ≤ 20𝑡: ℎ = 8÷10
0

𝑙0
heavy crane 𝑄 > 20𝑡: ℎ = (reinforced concrete beams are not recommended)
8
WIDTH: 𝑏𝑤 = 0.5ℎ 𝑐𝑚, 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 5 𝑐𝑚
FLANGE HEIGHT: ℎ𝑓 = 10 ÷ 14 𝑐𝑚, 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 2 𝑐𝑚
FLANGE WIDTH: 𝑏𝑓 = 𝑏𝑤 + 20𝑐𝑚
4. COLUMN

DIMENSIONS OF THE COLUMN:

UPPER PART: 0.3 x 0.3 m or 0.3 x 0.4 m or 0.4 x 0.4 m
LOWER PART:
- width of the lower part the same as for the upper part: 0.3 m or 0.4 m
- height of the cross section depends on many factors: dimensions of the hall, type of
crane, type of roofing system, type of facade etc.
𝐿 = 15 ÷ 19 𝑚 → 0.6 ÷ 0.7 𝑚
𝐿 = 19 ÷ 24 𝑚 → 0.7 ÷ 0.8 𝑚
𝐿 = 24 ÷ 30 𝑚 → 0.8 ÷ 1.0 𝑚

REACTION FROM CRANE BEAM

5. FOUNDATION

AREA OF THE FOUNDATION:

𝑁
𝐴=
𝑞𝑓 − 20𝐻𝑠
(𝑞𝑓 = 0.3 ∗ 103 ; 𝐻𝑠 = 1.5)

𝑎 and 𝑏 = 1.5𝑎 – the dimensions of the foundation

1.4𝐴 = 𝑎 ∗ 𝑏 → 1.4𝐴 = 1.5𝑎2
