The art of mixing When you first go into a club and hear the loud, thumping music, you
might be mistaken for believing that it all sounds the same. But the sounds that come
from different DJs are as different as the DJs themselves. Although DJs are mixing
other people’s music, there is plenty of opportunity to insert their own creativity into the
mix. Nowadays, just the style of the mixing can make DJs into recognised, and very
wealthy, musicians in their own right. Successful DJs don’t only learn the technical
aspects of mixing – they ‘feel’ the music. Most DJs would agree that training their ‘ear’
is the easy part – they can spend time listening to tracks over and over again to discover
what the performers – and indeed, the sound engineers – have created. But, like in most
other areas of life, some people are simply blessed with raw, natural talent. And, like in
most other areas of life, these lucky few will become the most successful.

Have you ever dreamt of becoming an engineer? Perhaps you want to programme robots, or
build an earthquake-proof tower? A new film, which was released in cinemas last week to
coincide with Engineering Week, promotes just such ambitions. Aimed at attracting the bright
engineers of the future, Dream Big tells the stories of engineers from all around the world who
are working hard to come up with innovative ideas not only to improve people’s lives, but also
to help the planet.
Wanting to highlight the ambitious plans of engineers around the world, director Greg
MacGillivray, travelled to places such as Africa, Dubai and China, in order to find and tell the
stories of engineers who are using their skills to try to change the world. MacGillivray grew up
near the sea, and his first films were about surfing and the ocean. Over time, he began to notice
changes in the ocean due to pollution and overfishing. He felt that these issues were important
to document, so began making films about the conservation of nature. To date, he has directed
38 films covering topics from the natural world to human innovation.
Angelica Hernandez is one of the engineers featured in Dream Big. In high school, she was on a
team that won an award in an underwater robotics competition, beating a team from a university
famed for its engineering. She claims that winning that award made her feel really excited and
hopeful for her future achievements. Today, Angelica works with energy companies, promoting
energy efficiency. She loves her work, earns good money and gets to travel the world. But the
best bit, she says, is getting to solve problems and help people.
Dream Big’s mission is to highlight the positive work that engineers do and to get school-age
children excited and interested in the possibilities of engineering. In MacGillivray’s words, ‘No
matter who you are, or where you are, you can become an engineer. All you need is the creative
spirit.’
