BTLED-HE 2A OCT. 03, 2023
At the tender age of 19, she opened a small "Villosa Store" store in
Manila, which eventually evolved into the iconic National Bookstore. She had
a keen interest in books and believed in the power of education. This
conviction led her to transform her small store into a haven for reading
materials. She began selling second-hand textbooks and eventually
expanded her inventory to include various types of books, school and office
supplies, art materials, and stationery. With her sharp business acumen, she
recognized the needs and demands of the growing Filipino market for quality
books and started importing books from foreign publishers.
Nanay Coring's story starts in 1945 when she and her husband, Jose
Ramos, opened their first bookstore, National Book Store, in Escolta, Manila.
With a capital of only P6,000, they faced numerous challenges, including the
aftermath of World War II and fierce competition from established
bookstores. However, their dedication and passion for books allowed them to
persevere.
